XZT and pinging??

Made a trip to Utah and back like I have many times before and this time when the XZT was on and setting and I would WOT it would ping really bad, turn to 0 and none. Did it up and back and with 2 different tanks of fuel. I had the same load, trailer, etc. Never did this before so whats up, why would it do it this trip and not before? Seem like it has a lack of power when it pings?????

Well, it is not really pinging.

Were you in higher altitude or hotter temps? This will make them sound a little different.

Check your front fender and see if it says "HEMI". If it says "Cummins" it's something other than pinging. Usually the diesel knock is only loud at idle and only with advanced timing on a CR. Must be something else or WAY too advanced.

I have had mine do that with poor quality fuel and a Rokktech. That is the only thing I can come up with. I changed fueling station to a high volume station and the noise went away along with working the pudding out of the truck every once in a while pulling a heavy load. Howe's Meaner cleaner also helped but working the truck cleaning the carbon off the injectors really does the trick and it's free.

Same temps and did it at high altitude and then again in Vegas on the way home. Its not just a different sound it is a very loud and distinct ping just like a gasser.

I had an XZT that I had to send back to Quad for a flash. It had so much advance at WOT it sounded like the engine was going to explode. Worked fine after the flash.

I have had a similar noise at times. Usually only happens at WOT or close to it pulling a load. I ran some fuel system cleaner through it for about 10 tank fulls and havent heard the noise since....

Fuel might be the answer as it never did this before but its funny that 2 tanks from different states do the same unless the first tank was really crappy. I will do the cleaner and try another fuel station and see if it don't clear up. My tow load was only about 3,000 lbs so it did not get a good work out. Thanks for the info everyone.

Mine did something like a ping/rattle once with the XZT. I was going uphill (empty) from a dead stop and punched it, then let off a few seconds later. When I let off the RPM's were up there and the tranny was just about to shift. It held the gear when I let off and the motor made a really loud distinct rattle sound just as the RPM's started to drop. It never did it again though even while towing. I figured it was some kind of timing glitch?

During the time my truck was making this loud pinging/rattling, i took the xzt off and sent it to quad for them to check out. Everything on the box was normal, and under the right circumstances my truck also made the noise stock. Ran the fuel cleaner for a little while, then stopped, all is well.

Mine always made this noise somewhere around 22-2600 rpms, had to be in the throttle pretty good to do it.
