Pinging from a diesel?

Have been driving my 97 CTD for about 2 weeks now and have been noticing the traditional cumbustion engine &quot;pinging&quot; sound around 1850-1900 rpms or so. At the same time, a whining can also be heard. Both come and go but get worse when at or above this rpm range and upon throttle increase. I've read that the whining could be the result of loose clamps on the turbocharger hoses or perhaps a resonation coming from a bad muffler. At first I thought the pinging sound was normal for a diesel but the more I think about it, the more I think its a sign of something not quite right. I intend to adjust the valves (odometer now at 50K) as I doubt that this was done at the recommended 24K interval. Hope this helps but not sure. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.<br>

Re:Pinging from a diesel?

The pinging is typically normal. It can happen at all RPM ranges, sometimes idling, sometimes mid throttle, sometimes full throttle. It depends on the trucks engine. It seems alot of these engines are flowing different than others. I wouldn't worry about it. The whine is prolly how you said.

Re:Pinging from a diesel?

For the pinging, check the overflow valve. The spring should be 500 thou., I think. If it is shorter, stretch it and then order a new valve from Piers.
My spring came out in four pieces!

Re:Pinging from a diesel?

Most likely you need to adjust your valves .... whining can be associated with alot of different things ... I doubt the overflow valve is the culprit ... pinch off your return line and see if your idle rises ... if it does check the overflow valve.

Re:Pinging from a diesel?

Mine was doing similar to what he's saying about pinging. Took it to the dealer and they send it out to have it fixed. When it come back I couldn't read every thing that they wrote, but they said something about a spill valve. I guess that's the overflow?? valve. Sure did run much better.
