Cummins Pinging / Injector Problems

Seems we have an awful lot of people complaining about having problems with their injectors getting clogged up on their 3rd gens. So, I'd like to see a poll here. How many people have had injector problems on their 555/600, and what kind of driving do you do? Would be nice to collect some more data on this, and I'm just curious. So, I'll start. I haven't had any injector problems, and I do mostly highway driving. So far have 2000 miles, a bit over 1600 of which are highway, although for the past 2.5-3 weeks it's been almost all city / short trips.

I believe the people who've reported the bad injectors have said that the engine very obviously runs poorly and loudly and misses. In other words, if you have an injector problem you'll know it.

Mine is an '03 with 27k that I just bought last month. Runs great and love this thing. I have noticed that when it sits overnight and when first started in the morning, when accellerating there is a kind of a distinct clattering heard until the engine has run for about 5 minutes, then it is just the normal, diesel sound from there on.

Is this normal or something to be concerned about when first starting and driving from a cold position.

Thanks,
Rick

I would be inclined to say that's normal. Diesels are more sensitive (at least noise wise) to tempeartures. When you started up my old 6.5 on a cold winter morning the thing absolutely SCREAMED until it had run for about 5 minutes. The clattering from the injectors I believe happens all the time. The injector is either broken or not broken, not broken for the first 5 minutes of operation and then fixes itself.

Mine makes an awful amount of clatter and noise at all speeds but more so off idle. This truck was wisper quiet(for a diesel) when I bought it but after the first 4000 miles it started getting louder. Now with 11000 miles it is still not as loud as my old 98.5 24 valver but it is much louder than it was new. My miss/stumble seems to be temp related. It misses when accelerating below 35 deg. The colder it gets the wors the miss/stumble. The clatter is not realy a knok to me but more of a loud tick. I have taken it in and they think its number 1 but Star wont let them replaice it because its not a drivability problem. Nevermind the fact that all my buddies laugh at me and my new $40000 crapy sounding truck. They all just say "shoulda bought a duramax." The best way I can describe the sound is it sounds like a older GM 3.1 with cold score. You know like 90% of the older luminas and such that sound like theyr on there last leg. Just not quite that bad.

3 injectors and a lift pump on mine.

Very slight clatter now.

Buddy of mine is lemon law-ing his truck due to the the white smoke/misfire/poor mpg, and its not the dealer's fault either. DC replaced one injector already, but won't replace anymore until a SES light comes on or its on "the hook". Its gone through a turbo too.

I can relate to the tic/knock. Good luck.

So far, no problems at 15k miles. But I do run a steady diet of diesel fuel additives.

John your story makes me wonder if there isn't some other fault that's causing the bad injectors if your truck came with them and then 7000 miles later is showing signs of them again. I assume you'll be taking the truck in again with the injector knock, perhaps it would be a good idea to press the dealer to look further into the system. If pressing doesn't work, try doing donuts in their lot.

Ok, now I may just be paranoid but I believe I'm beginning to hear the injector knock under mild acceleration in the 1500-2000 rpm range. I'll add my PS Diesel Supplement (since it's getting cold out here anyway) and see what that does.

I have had my truck for about 5 months and have close to 20K miles on it so far. I guess since mine runs good I don't have any problems. The only problem I have, and it may not be a problem, is that I make lots of black smoke under heavy acceleration. From what I have read in various posts the smoke is unburned fuel. Would something like a BHAF reduce the black smoke?
