Codes with heater grid delete

On my 06 it will every once in a while when the truck is real cold for a few days set a code. But it's a "soft" code that will go away soon after it comes on. I just clear it with my Juice......Ive had my spacer on for atleast 6 mons and ive only seen the code twice.

Pretty sure this only on the 06's and newer. DC changed the way the grid comes on in 06 and they come on much less than the older ones. I had only seen the "wait to start" light come on one time when i was in Yosemite. It was 9 deg.

My 04 would come on every time i started it no matter the temp.

My '06 has also set a couple codes, but they don't affect anything and can be cleared easily. It was in the 30's here a few nights ago and I started the truck with temps around 48* and it did ok. Slightly rougher than normal and a little white smoke for a few seconds but that cleared right up.

Does anyone the minimum temperature the third gen cummins will fire up without the grid heaters?
Looks like Ill be answering my own question soon enough.
CFM= / Grid Detete on its way.
I will plug it in if I have to.

I can't say for sure what the intention of the grid heater is (starting aid, emissions, I don't know), but I have started mine around 10F without waiting for it and I noticed no difference at all.

disconnect

I have the grid heaters disconnected from the passenger side battery.
The amp meter is still showing draw as if they were still connected. Is this just another computer generated signal like the oil pressure gauge?
thanks,doug

No, the ECM controls the alternator, however. The reason for low voltage on a cold start is due to the alternator not charging because the ECM told it not to. I don't know if this is some protection measure when the grid heater cycles or what, but it's not due to the heater drawing power.

I think the heater grid is more of an emissions piece for quicker warm-ups.. I've never driven a big rig w/intake heaters and we are running roughly the same compression.

YEP...emissions only. I need a spacer. I would love to kill anything with wires under my hood right now that I DON'T need!

Why is it that powerstrokes need the glow plugs to start say below 40 degrees. Heck i fired up our 03 7.3 with 30k miles the other morning at 30 degrees and it was 30 seconds or so before the bluye smoke and slightly rough idle stopped? All teh glow plugs, harnesses and gpr is good, i bet it would have struggled to even fire with no heat.

Seems like every other inline diesel ive ever messed with starts right up even at 15 degrees......skidsteers, backhoes, tractors, the c-12 in our kenworth....

anyone know the compression ratio on the 5.9? has it changed over the years? Anyone know the compression on the 7.3 p-stroke?
