WINspeed Heater Grid Delete Test Complete!

You can check out the full write up on the TVP site here: http://trivalleyperformance.com/inde...d=19&Itemid=51

We did the test on a STOCK, '03HO, 6-speed truck. We did with and without the Predator on Extreme, and found some oddities in the programmer, but the doggon thing made a little power!

Cool. I've wondered if there's any difference and it looks like there is.

I would like to see the same test with an aftermarket air horn also. I know the air horns give some power on their own, but I bet the delete block would show an even larger gain combined with an aftermarket horn.

To be clear, for best results an aftermarket intake Horn is required....the grid heater delete should be bolted to the intake horn and then the overlap should smoothed with a die grinder or file. Ideally the intake manifold top plate should be die ground to match the grid heater delete. If you are gonna start down the intake smoothing road....you may as well make sure the whole path is paved. The same smoothing should be done on the head to exhaust manifold and turbo to manifold connections. anyone can do this and it will make you feel all warm inside knowing that you have done all that is possible. I'm hoping Eric will keep the program of testing going by doing the filter/intake and the exhaust manifold. Keep up the good work. KS

You bet! We'll keep finding things to test for sure.

The Delete with the Intake definitely yield greater results. Trimming the gasket or using Adam's fancy gaskets also helps eliminate disturbances in the airflow. Any port matching you can do also helps maximize the gains.

Plus, these things just look cool!

Erik, for a real improvment a ported/matched intake manifold is needed. WINspeed has been porting the ATS horn to match the spacer for some time. When Combined w/ the better reusable gasket you would see even better results.

The numbers you found are not suprising to me even on a stock truck. With the right blending of parts and porting you will see a bigger gain im sure. every little bit helps and the combo of intake filters, torque tubes, intercoolers, horns, spacer and porting id bet you could see at least a 70-90 hp gain on a fuelled/boosted truck.

Good job thanks again Erik.......see you tomorrow in your slicker!!!!

Nice write up and nice to see some hard numbers. The thing I found most curious was this;
We decided to call Diablosport for more info, and they explained that some adaptation does take place, and a power discrepancy is not unusual if the program is loaded/unloaded more than once. With the overall loss explained, we went back to the testing the grid delete on the “Re-Loaded” Extreme setting.
Does this mean the program malfunctioned when you removed it and then reloaded it or did it just not load correctly?

Your guess is as good as mine. We loaded/unloaded it several times with the truck back to where it was when it came in. Ran the numbers corrected and uncorrected, everything! It was just down on power. No evidence in the curve that the clutch was slipping, truck was allowed to cool between changes. Their tech department said "Oh yeah, you will get different numbers if you load/unload, then it will adapt back up.

Adaption of the map is something I am used to with OBDII cars, but I have never seen a diesel adapt all that much. My SMarty is within 3-5 HP loaded/unloaded/reloaded.

I'm considering heater grid delete as well as intake horn upgrade. What do you do w/wireing and relays etc.? Would like clean install and eliminate wires. Also, once you do the delete, do you have to live w/codes or is there a way to do it and not have any codes?

What about cold mornings? Is it hard to crank? Lately its been getting around low 30's here all night. Would I have any trouble?

yeah, baby

I got one from Adam awhile back and noticed (SOP Dyno) some improvement, maybe more 'cause I ordered the higher HP/TQ red block.

IMHO it's worth the money. YMMV

You can completely eliminate the wiring going to the grid (disconnect at the relays by the pass battery) and the rest of the wiring is cool. No codes are set in our experience, so you should be fine.

My truck fires right up at 26degrees and goes to high idle, so unless you are below 30 on a regular basis, you should be fine.

Cool.
I am more stoked to hear about you. I used to refer Customers to Richards Diesel. I had no idea you were there. I Even used to work at the Tranny shop in that same complex!
