What do you mean just cut it off? Guess I don't understand what hitch you have, but I would guess that if you cut it that it would end up in two pieces. A good welder could weld it no problem, welds are stronger than the steel.

here's a data point for lurkers:
for my 4x4 I had 3 hitches, and 3 *****,
the 24 foot i had needed the regular hitch to sit level when FULL of race car stuff (~9k)
an open car trailer needed a ~4 drop
and the little utility trailers needed the 6 drop to set even
and i only had one of each ball, so it was PITB to swap trailers.
in order words, spend the money on a good hitch, with the interchangeable *****, and you will save ~30 minutes everytime you swap trailers, and you are ALWAYS in a hurry when you are hitching up to go some where.
this is another tool that is worth the money because it saves you time,
and you get what you pay for
FWIW, i got a straight stick with 3 ***** on my 4x2, and the other drops are for sale if someone wants to change out the ***** all the time

I just got rid of my lifted (6") 05 and now have a stock 06 mega and my drop hitch is about 4" from the ground!! I am going to see If I can take it to a metal shop with a metal cutting band saw and take about 4" off of it.. Do you think this will weaken it???? Should I just go get a smaller drop???
Thanks guys

To answer the initial question....I use a 4" drop, but like most here, different trailers need different drops. The adjustable ones are real nice, but not nearly strong enough for what I tow. I have now gone to solid steel formed drawbars with a 30,000# rating. I have turned the ***** nearly 90deg on the lighter ones with this setup below: If weight isnt an issue-go adjustable-worth the bucks!
