hitch drop?

How much drop on the hitch is normally needed for a 2500 4x4 for general purpose towing like a 14 enclosed trailer? I was figuring that 4 inches would work for most trailers. Opinions?

I have a 5-1/2 " and a 6" and they both work good for my 20' enclosed and my 5x8 landscape.

I'm a getting a 6" drop for my 6x12 enclosed cargo trailer. I measured the difference between the trailer level and the truck and it is right around 6".

It's my birthday (in February ) so I just got myself a new Rapid Hitch by Andersen mfg. Its a class 4 hitch that's adjustable, and made from Aluminum, so it weighs a ton less than the steel ones. I just uploaded a picture, so take a look later. This thing comes in a larger size also. Kinda spendy though, but pretty cool.

Wow, never seen that before. Looks nice, and ~$150..that's not too bad. I've got two inserts for the explorer, and probably will have one for the RAM, if I bought that to start it wouldn't be too much extra.

They also make aluminium drop bars. And the price is similar to that of the heavy steel ones. What's the catch here? Any reason not to do Aluminium?

Beavermike,

Is that hitch noisy when pulling? It seems like all those moving parts would result in a lot of rattling and movement of the hitch.

Well, I just got it last week. Haven't yet towed with it. Seems plenty solid, if you put weight down on it it doesn't seem to move much more than any other hitch. It's rated 10,000 lbs, and 1500 tongue weight.

A friend has the same hitch and uses it for all kinds trailers at works. He recommended it rather than get several different hitches. Sorry I can't really answer your question for sure.

I have been using a 6" drop and it is about the right height, but since I removed the spring spacer blocks I believe I will go to a 4" because the 6" now seems to be to low.

Beavermike,

After you use it, if you get a chance to let me/us know I'd appreciate it. It looks like a good solution.
