debating on getting a rail pressure gauge or boost gauge? What gauge do you guys think would be more important to monitor?

 

That's a tough one as both are important in monitoring performance of your vehicle....and if you're not hitting optimal rp or boost, you're not getting your $'s worth for perf mods out of the truck...not sure how much pressure the BD can build or how agressive it is...but if it's a heavy pressure runner you could be draining the rail and not knowing it...especially w/ out fuel pump....on the flip side, if you're not boost fooling or have a boost leak...same thing...i had the boost guage first and then added rp / fp later...

Reasons for RP Guage - tell you if you're draining the rail, ensure you're not cruising at 20+k psi (bad for fuel system for extended periods)....maybe sign of clogged fuel filter (but think that's the fp guage)...

Reasons for Boost Guage - tell you if you're building optimal boost, boost fooling, boost leak....max boost

Thanks! Good info you gave me!! I just put my truck on the dyno this weekend and hit a peak of 399 hp and 780 ft of torque. Thats not allot but is good for me. I am trying to make my motor last 500,000 miles. just thinking i should monitor some more so it will last. So from what you are saying i think the fuel or rail pressure gauge might be more important as far as safety for the motor? i would like to get both, but i only have the pillar with 3 holes, and don't want to put anything on the dash.

 

Your not at the level to need a RP gauge. A boost gauge will help with mileage concerns, etc. It will be far more useful to you.

 

If you want it to last 500k then take it back to stock and get a nice fuel filter setup. Mine lasted 140k and the rings went, not that all do but if you push 4-5-600hp then probably expect it to last only twice as long as a 6leaker

 

Geno's sells the steering column 2 gauge mount, that is where I am thinking of putting a FP and RP gauge. IMO I think it looks pretty good on the steering column.

 

I would say the boost gauge has a higher priority. RP gauge is one of those nice to have items, but not mandatory unless using large amounts of duration, larger injectors and a pressure box.

RP is important when you're stacking fuel or diagnosing the high-pressure side of the fuel system.

 

One more vote for boost gauge.

When I bought my truck I installed EGT, BOOST and FP, the typical 3 most people put in a truck with a standard tranny. When I had issues with the rail pressure relief valve, my dealership was unable to make it fail or duplicate its problems under their 'normal' 2-3 mile test drives. I put in the RP gauge and was able to report to them the dips in pressure, fluctuations took place when holding the throttle steady. Their tech too my truck for a drive, tried holding the throttle steady, saw the fluctuations and replaced the rp relief valve based on that information. 40K+ miles later, my rp is as steady as a rock.

Every gauge has it's value/merit, depends on how you see it's benefit and what you want to monitor. The rp gauge will tell you when your CP3 is having a problem as well. The boost gauge will tell you about how your turbo is functioning, both are good to have.

Think i am going to get a boost gauge first, then a RP gauge. JMMCDONA think i will get the steering column mount like you were saying. looks like it will be good and is a good price. Eventually i will be getting both gauges tho, when i get some more money kicking around.
