What to do with transmission
What transmission is best?
I have a 2004.5 and the transmission just went out. I am looking into a few different options and am wondering what would be the best transmission to get.
I am looking for a transmission that would be great for both daily driving and towing that can handle extra horsepower and a lot of stop and go situations. Thanks for the input

I'm looking at upgrading my transmission as well and have been searching the forums...if you enter “Goerend” in the forum search within the 3rd gen section..high performance upgrades or not (depending on your preference) you'll get an endless amount of opinions and testimonial threads that will really help make your decision.
The rest I’m going to be a parrot and repeat most of what I’ve read in these forums.
The "Big 3" that seem to be everybody’s favorite (by majority anyway) on this forum are Goerend, DTT and ATS. The other big take away that I've found is if you're going to do it, do it right the first time or you'll spend twice as much down the road (literally and figuratively) fixing the half-a$$ stuff you were trying to save money with. Personally I think I’ll go with Goerend not just for their transmissions, but their customer service seems to be unparalleled. Many people have called Dave (and others, names escape me) and he’s given them a no B.S. assessment of what would work for them based on what they plan on doing with the truck and not tried to sell them a bunch of stuff they didn’t need.
It’s an 8 hour drive to them for me, but I like driving and I think it would be worth it to visit them and shake their hand, that’s just me though.
If you’re not so close, all of the “Big 3” can recommend good shops near you that pedal their products, since your tranny is shot already you probably will be more interested in that option.
Also fill out your sig so we can know more about what you’re driving and some of the more knowledgeable guys can give you more pointed advice.
Sorry for the long post….I’m in Kuwait and bored out of my mind
and want to tinker on my truck soooo bad.

Good luck!

Thanks for the information. I will get my fill out my signature. It is just 2nd gear that is slipping. I can still drive it but i have to be careful or it will slip back and forth between 1st. and 2nd.
1st off where are you located? You may have a reputable builder near by, if thats the case it doesnt matter so much if it is TRE,DTT,Goerend,HTS,Garmon, it matters that they are close so you will have little to no down time and if there is ever a problem you can talk face to face.

What you need to do is have a reputable trans builder take a look at it and tell you what you need. Or, give us a lot more information. No reason to replace an entire trans because one part is broken. Noone can really tell you what to do when all we know is you have extra horsepower and stop and go driving.
I'm in sacramento right now for school. I do not know much more about the problem except for the mechanic told me 2nd. gear was out. I had my transmission flushed and they tightned the bands about a year ago. The snap ring in over drive was broke and some of it was still in there working. They told me not to do anything until it wouldn't work anymore.
