Uhhhh oooooh... Power bugs bit.. Few questions

I planned to not really mod the powertrain on the CTD too much but DANG, couldn't resist..

I needed gauges though, so once I got them ordered I made the mistake of looking at programmers. Stupid....

Came across a Predator for a price I couldn't pass up so what the heck.. I'll eventually upgrade to a Smarty, but at less than 1/2 the cost I figured I'd try the ol' Predator first...

THEN I start searching and it seems a boost fooler really helps with EGT's sooooooooooo.... Quad boost fooler coming....

Predator came in right now so I loaded it up on the Performance setting, and it's NICE!!! I don't have a lot to compare too in the way of "diesels", but I do know I didn't want a ton of smoke. If I stomp the pedal I get a nice little puff which cleans up right away... Much better than I was expecting smoke-wise, and the power is great. I'll take it easy till the gauges come in very soon. I think my fast old 400hp 64' El Camino would pretty much be eating bumper...

Questions...

I want to run a good quality straight through LONG muffler. Something with zero "drone". I wan't it to be only a bit more loud than stock(out the pipe), but I can't have ANY interior drone as I HATE that. Any sites I can browse?

Now I'm peaking at Goerends site AHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you!

Don

Hey Don. How's things in the shop? The Donaldson or Nelson 51" might be the ticket for you. It's nice and quiet when it needs to be and has some growl when you get on it. I've got the MBRP replacement and it's probably too loud for your taste, but it sounds good.

I've tried a few different muffler combinations that were all too loud. The Donaldson/Nelson muffler is perfect. Not too loud, no drone, and inexpensive.

No smoke.

My Smarty works as advertised but you have to go easy on the accelerator or it's smoke central. I'm confident Marco will come out with a 65hp program for us guys that is a little less touchy in the smoke dept. Glad to hear the Predator is working for you.

Yup, as soon as I get around to it, the MBRP is coming off and a 51" Donaldson is going on. My dad put one on his truck and it has nice tone outside the truck but sounds stock inside the truck.

Thanks guys!!!

So, the Donaldsons are straight through? I take it a perforated(bagillion punched holes)core with a sounds deadening media? That is exactly the muffler I am looking for. Any good places to buy?

Trevor, BUSY as usual as I do 99.9% of everything myself. Allways something to do....

Got mine at local truck shop for around $78. Make sure you get the straight thru one as there is another one with some type of baffle.

Been searching all over the net and decided on the Donaldson M090535. 5" "straight through" with no baffle, 3260cfm, and a 12-17db reduction. I decided to get some 4"-5" step adapters to weld in, so I can keep my 4" exhaust for now which should keep it pretty quiet, and the 4" pipe should keep the great bottom end I'd imagine..

Drilled the EGT port in the manifold and I went for the up top spot so I could easily magnet out the shavings.. Just plugged the 1/8"NPT hole for now waiting for the gauges..

How did you do the drilling? I can do the work, just scared about messing up the turbo.

I dont suppose I recomend it but I followed the directions that edge supplied and I dont remember reading anything about getting the shavings out as per their directions and I know I didnt even worry about it then and I just got lucky. If I wreck my turbo though I can talk the old lady into a new one. I read later on here about somebody that felt they ruined their turbo cause of metal shavings. Maybe im not so lucky.

I just drilled a pilot(about 3/16" I think), and then used a 5/16" bit as the pre-size before tapping for the 1/8" NPT. I drilled in the same spot as shown in the Quadzilla instructions here PAGE 8. Drilling here has all the shavings land in the tube since it's horizontal. Once drilled, I took a magnet stuck to a small file and fished out all the shavings. I then stuck the magnet to a length of bailing wire and fished down the tube a bit each way just to be sure...

I have been reading the intall directions, might be a dumb question but where did you find such a small magnet? Did you have the truck running when you drilled?

If it were done with the engine running I'm pretty sure everything would blow out the hole, but I didn't feel like blowing the shavings in my face either..

Either way, even if the shaving went through the turbo they are tiny, but get a good chunk in somewhere and ehhhhhhhh, I didn't want to risk it...

I stuck a big magnet to a thin piece of steel to "magnify" it. The shaving are so small it doesn't take much attraction to get them. Just poke the steel rod down the hole..

Truck off when I drill... Lots o' shavings came out with the magnet..
