turbo? Help

SPS6280 on my truck.....

just running downloader, its fine under normal driving cirumstances.

stack something like a TST or Hot Juice and it make noise under acceleration in normal driving situations.

when the turbo winds up really fast, it whistles a very very hitch pitch....then quiets down to normal aftermarket turbo noise. Say boost shot up real fast (like on tt03)....it makes this noise horribly! roll into gently and it doesn't do it.

i spiked to 57psi with it the other day....and it made the noise horribly....usually, just turning the box down helps because boost doesn't ramp up so fast.

one day it was pulling hard at 48 (wastegate) and then my gauge started creeping on and this noise was getting louder and louder. i took my foot off the throttle when the boost gauge was reading 51psi.

there is some turbo play, just a hair more than in a stock-turboed 06 with 20k on it.

I'm thinking i have a boost leak somewhere......am suggestions on how to fix this problem or where to look for leaks?

all intercooler boots are tight....

maybe i should pull all boots and re-install them with hairspray to help them stick better?

I called Industrial...they were clueless.

help...i'm all ears

If you had a boost leak, wouldnt it be hard for the boost to climb from 48 to 51?

Just tryin to help you trouble shoot.

Sounds like you are taking the turbo off its efficiency map by overspeeding it. When the boost keeps going does it feel like its surging. You need a bigger turbo if you are going to fuel that hard....or a biggin hanging off the the bottom....twins. ks

Phil, I had a strange noise issue when I installed my turbo. What I found was that the threaded portion of the mounting studs were not long enough because the mounting flange on my HTB2 was not as thick as the stock unit. This caused the flange to not be tight even though I tightened the bolts all the way and I ended up blowing that gasket out and got an exhaust leak plus a strange sound when the turbo spooled up. I got a new $2.00 gasket and added some lock washers to the rear (engine side) studs and all is fine now.
I didn't notice this issue during the install because I tightened the front ones first so the turbo was nice and tight when I went to tighten up the rears. When I went to pull the turbo off to inspect the strange noise I pulled the two front bolts off and the turbo started falling off without me even loosening the rear bolts any.....

phil I would take it off and have it checked out. you could end up with pieces of it in your intercooler like a guy posted on here or worse. you dont want that. everyone tells me that those 62s are quick spoolers but they dont last long. you have plenty of fuel for something bigger if you are gonna keep the truck

Thats something i was afraid of hearing......i've thought of it though. When boost keeps going, it doesn't feel any stronger or weaker or feels like it surges.....i've had it stall and surge so i know what it feels like.

so how much does it cost to upgrade to a SPS66?

hmm good thought....i'll check into it.

theres the turbo.....it looks to me like the outer edges of the fans are a ligter color...from heat? its nothing too noticeable but my stocker didn't look like that...ever.

also.....there is some turbo shaft play.....push it down, and it doesn't want to spin nearly as easy. Under hard acceleration or high boost, is it pushing the wheel down or up...and when it spins, its makes the noise?

The compressor wheel looks normal. The lighter color is from the machining/balancing process.

At 57 psi...you are WAY off its map and tick tocking a bomb on borrowed time.

phil im just telling you what ppl tell me. I have a friend that has run alot of different turbos and trucks with big fuel eat up small turbos quickly. anything that is based off an S300 wont last long. I dont want the slow spool of K31 or something that big but I dont want something im gonna outgrow either.

Aftermarket turbos, at least the ones I've been around, seem to have a little more up and down play due to looser tolerances than factory turbos. Also, it's normal to have some up and down play because when there's no oil around the bearing it has some slack. The oil takes up the slack when it's running. As long as there is no in and out play your fine.
