Turbo "barking" (bad dog)!!
Turbo "barking" (bad dog)!!
I use my truck to tow a pretty heavy (12K+) toy hauler. When towing the Smarty is set for towing (default). When pulling a steep grade, the turbo can reach almost 40lbs of boost. If, for some reason, I have to drop out of the throttle quickly, the pressure built up will "bark" back through the turbo. From the sound it makes, you know it can't be good for the turbo.
Question: Is there a blow-off valve or some kind of pressure relief valve that can be installed in-line that will prevent the pressure from backing up to the turbo?
I have heard of guys blowing the boots off the inter-cooler from excess turbo pressure.
Thanks, Steve

If your CAC boots are good and tight you won't have a problem at those pressures. The BOV's are an expensive finicky addition.
You have a couple choices,
Turn back on the WG control with the Smarty or remove the boost fooler, which ever is the one holding the boost, and not get the benefit of more boost to allow the extra power and extra cooling.
Leave it the way it is and learn to drive aorund the bark. Don't lift suddenly under high boost conditions, use the OD off feature until your up to speed. The OD shift\lock and lifting off the accelerator suddenly are the 2 biggest culprits but the easiest to resolve with a driving change.
Get another turbo that is not as susceptible to barking. With a single charger you will loose spool and bottom end to address the high pressures and it is expensive. Twins area other option.
FWIW, mine has done the same thing for 2 years and over 100k. I just learned to drive around it by mitigating the things I suggested.

Best way I have found yet to stop the barking.
