Truck runnin ruff, any ideas?

I cranked my truck a couple of days ago and it had only been shut off for 24hrs or less.

Smarty beta on 4.4, mp8 off, and tst on 1/0 econ program with no pressure and 3*s auto timing.

Nothin on my truck has changed in at least 2 months but when I cranked my truck the other day it sounded like it had a huge cam in it or like a 12 vavle pullin truck that was tryin to get spooled. All guages read good and no codes other than the normal 0602, maybe a slight haze at the exhaust but it was gettin dark and hard to tell but nothin excessive at idle.

I drove the truck a few miles and it has quit but I was just wondering if you fellas had any ideas.

Thanks

Fuel filter...?

maybe change your 'smarty' program to stock and back where it is now ...listen to your lift pump ( you know how it is buzzing away while programing) ...see if its workin right

My fuel pressure was 19-20, I am about due for a change but the pressure at the cp3 was good. Rail pressrue was good too holding steady, no bouncing around.

My next step was to return the ECM to stock but like I said it hasnt done it since, so that wont tell me anything right now. And even the though the fp guage was sayin 19-20 lbs, I could hear the lp runnin too, before the truck cranked.

But it on the DRB and check the injectors man hate to say it that could be the problem. If it turns out their good that is atleast some piece of mind knowing they are. The best part about it you dont even have to get your hands dirty to do it.

The Drb Won't Usually Tell Much If Your Sticks Aren't Too Bad Or Even Consistantly Bad.even A Contribution Test Will Show Variance Between Cylinders Even When They're All Fine.

It could be caused by a bad connection at your MAP and Rail plugs. I periodically had to pull the MP-8 harness and apply some dielectric grease to the connections. After that, all was well.

If theres even a possibility that its an injector problem it would help to give it a good dose of injector cleaner like Power Service.

when I change my filter I fill the canister with power service and fuel 1/2+1/2

that way everything gets a bath

Um....why? WAY to much PS and too little diesel. Might as well dump some gasoline in there too!

Will, I always turn the TST off on shutdown or if I forget...start up....you will immediately notice a difference....especially on the E program...it starts the timing advance at idle and it is full 18 degrees I'm sure before 1/2 throttle. I'm sure it will be ok but the truck warms up faster that way and is quieter....not quiet. The added Smarty rail pressure at idle and low in the rpms makes it seem twice too much. Kerry

Prob. either the fca stuck for a moment or a conn. as JCLeary said. with it running unplug the fca for a moment and see if thats the sound you heard. Plug it back in and rev it a little and the sound will go away.

Awsome info guys, thanks a lot. I kinda thought injector too but after driving 2 miles maximum all was fine, no smoke or nothin, and I smelled the oil and checked leve after about 20 minutes of driving and the level was almost dead between add and full and no smell of diesel.

Kerry, that if very interesting, I have never heard of that but I will give it a try.

I was about 60 degrees when I fired the truck up and so far this year I have cranked it in the 20s no problems what so ever. I am takin my truck to work tomorrow (I have anothe I usually drive for work) and I will see how it does, but I will start shuttin the tst off and I may redo my connections too with di electric grease.

Also FWIW, I have been meanin to get the 4.4 off my truck just because of the pressure but have been to lazy to, I have found a good deal on some injectors I may go ahead and buy as spares, or run em and have mine tested.

Thanks again for all your help fellas.

PS, shouldnt really be an FCA just cause the one in there is factory and only has about 5k on it. Anything is possible but I dont really think that is what it is.

Also I run 16oz of PS in every tank
