trade-offs

Okay guys I've been lurking around and posted one or two questions. Now I've got another one.

The truck needs tires in a bad way. It still has the stockers on it and the rears are shot.

I'm thinking of going to a 35" tire. Here are the questions:

Will I see any benefit of going up in wheel size as far as MPG goes. 20"vs 18"vs 17"???
What are some inexpensive things I can do to improve MPG after adding 35's? Basically, what can I do to keep the same as I'm getting now?

Lastly, what gears do I have? 70 mph, ~2000 rpm with stock 265 17's

Thanks in advance fellas. Sorry if this is a dead horse question.

Just guessing at the RPM @ 70 I would say 3.73s.

As far as wheel size selection affecting MPG, I am sure in some very small way, someone could argue more vs less rotating mass, and other such arguments but I doubt that you would see any noticeable difference. The main difference will come from the size of the tire you decide to put on that wheel. With wheel selection on these trucks, I would be more concerned with the weight rating, even if you don't think you will tow I would still select one with a good weight rating because one day you might change your mind about not towing...my .02

What kind of mileage are you getting Black?

I was looking at that same combo, Rockstars and 35" Toyo's. I debadged the truck over the weekend and just didn't have the energy left to remove the door spears. I'm sure there is a better way than plastic putty knife and Goo Gone.

The truck is white so it wouldn't be a copy of yours.

PS That truck is bad ***. I love it more every time I see it.

Thank you for the compliment! It is always nice to hear good things about the truck...

I am getting an overall avg of about 17.2. This is Highway, town, towing, and the truck will idle a bit in the winter, out checking cows etc...

I need to debadge this truck as well, just haven't gotten around to it yet. I still have door spears in place, they are just painted red, so they don't show up too well. I am planning on using fishing line and the 3M eraser wheel for the debadge.

A white truck, debadged, with the balck rockstars and Toyos is going to look GREAT!!! Make sure to post up some pics!

gears are most likely 3.73. never found any real difference in mileage by going up in wheel size but bigger tires will drop your mpg's as will going with super aggresive mudders (more rolling resistance).

I saw no real net change between my stocker aluminum 17" wheels and stocker street tires and my rockstars with 35" Toyo M/Ts. Truck was about 17 before switching at 42,XXX miles and is still about 17 at 54,XXX miles.

I went up from the 265 70 17's to a set of H2's with the 35's. I immediately didn;t like the fact that it took more pedal for in town driving, which will eventually translate into reduced mpg's. JMO. Instead I went down to the 295/70/17 Nitto terragrapplers, and like the larger tiresize, lower rpm range at 70MPH, and not having to stay in the skinny pedal to get em rolling..My .02

With an auto tranny that is probably true. With the 6spd it takes no extra to get it rolling. I still start in 2nd or 3rd gear.
