Track tips
Hey guys I was thinking about running my truck done the local drag strip. I was just seeing if anyone had any tips they could share. I don't think it will be fast at all but just would like to see what it can do. Thanks guys!
You will want to play with the amount of boost at launch, you may have to be in 4x4 for traction and you need to anticipate the light. In other words, if you see green then push the go pedal it is already too late to have a decent reaction time. Good luck.

To add one more thing. If your serious about cutting time, be sure to take off the spare tire and take out that tool box and whatever other weight you can shed. These trucks look like a 400 lbs defensive lineman that can run 4 flat in the 40

Let me see if I can help you here Sir.
I have been drag racing Dodge Diesel Pickup Trucks for quite awhile now.
My 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve is set-up specifically for drag racing. You can look at my signature for how it is set-up.
You need to launch your truck in 4WD High. Leave the transmission in drive and let it shift normally. I generally ease up to the lights at the drag strip and as I light the first set of bulbs (PRE-STAGED) I begin building boost by holding my brake and easing into the accelerator. Slowly keep building boost until you get to about 10-15lbs and at that point ease into the second set of lights (STAGED). CAUTION: IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN AFTERMARKET TRANNY DO NOT GO ABOVE 10LBS OF BOOST!
Once the STAGED light comes on you will see the lights below that start to light one at a time. On the LAST YELLOW you need to floor it and GO!
Here is a video link for you of a drag race between my 1996 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel Pickup and the 2001 Chevy Camaro SS. The Camaro was pretty well modified. The owner had an SLP Cam and modified heads, American Racing Headers, Tuner, FASS Intake along with drag racing slicks!
When you watch the video, you will hear a loud noise. That is NOT my truck, but the OPEN HEADERS on that guys Camaro!! LOL!! When the link opens, click on the picture in the upper left hand corner, that is my truck:

Thanks for the help guys, I'm not serious at time at all. I have been to the races all my life but never been down the track so I figure I would see what she can do in the every day mode. I'll post up times after I run again thanks for the tips.

I'm installing gauges this Saturday so that will help out a little and I will deffinetly be in 4wd hi next time. I know my times were not that great but when a turbo Honda civic runs a 14.7 it feels pretty good to know I'm not far behind. If I can figure it out I will try to post some videos.

Good run Sir!
You are not going to get a good time until you put that transfer case into
4WD HI and build about 8-10 pounds of boost at the line. As I said in my earlier post, BE CAREFUL about going over about ten (10) lbs of boost UNLESS you have a built transmission with at least a billet input and billet output. I know that because I have broken several of them!
Our trucks are not going to perform well in 2WD because they have too much torque off the line, even in stock condition.

Thanks for the 8-10lbs tip, I'll try that next time in out there. I have a BD teams with a Billit Imput shaft but I don't want to push it too much. I would like to upgrade the output shaft this summer. I can't wait to go back to the track!!
You are very welcome on the tips Sir!
If you have a billet input, that is good, but remember the stress will go to the next weakest link, that being, the output shaft.
Also, be sure you leave the line on the LAST YELLOW LIGHT. That will give you a great 60ft time!
I cut some ok lights
And yes I know risky, but it was either run my truck or quit my job I was so stressed out( I'm back at work haha).
As far a turbo what is a good street/track turbo? My buddy said if I do a turbo I should go ahaed and stud it and do the head, that's why I havnt jumped on it yet.

You asked about what a good turbo is. You will get alot of opinions about that, but I am running a Schwitzer 62/12 on my 2006. It has a 62mm inducer/compressor wheel and a smaller exhaust housing. Take off is great with very little lag. I tried a the larger 64mm compressor wheel but take-off was not good on my truck with that turbo. IMHO, you don't need studs to run a larger turbo. I have 127,000 miles on my 2006 and have had no problems at all. My maximum boost is only about 42lbs.
