Good point - With the temps everyone is talking about - I assume they are talking about pre temps.

Thanks all,
v8440 no offence taken at all, specifically because I know that I am setting all of the paramaters, which is why I stated that I would be interested in a different box that is usable at these specific hp/torque #'s. As far as boost elbows, I installed it today, not for nothing in the instructions it states "that your ez will work equally well with or without the boost elbow" I thought the elbow was for seat of the pants feel versus gains, I learned something, thanks! Boost gages? are they good for anything other than if a problem exist, ie. do you actually drive by the boost like an egt gauge? Thanks for the input, two things I am definatly becoming more and more aware of is the differance in trucks and elevation does make a differance.

As you probably know, boost in a diesel doesn't make power so much as it lowers combustion temperatures, and therefore egt's. In essence, it allows you to inject more fuel without exceeding safe temperatures. More fuel makes more power. So, more boost (within reason) means more power is safely possible. The problem is, the turbo can only make so much boost in a given application safely. Eventually, as boost rises, the speeds the turbo must spin at to make the boost exceed the safe mechanical limits of the turbo. Additionally, a small turbo being asked to make more boost in a given scenario than it really should may make the boost, but it will heat the air its compressing to the point that the increased cooling the increased boost should have brought doesn't materialize.

Now, here's where you and your boost gauge come in; The limits of the stock turbos are well known. In the 04.5's and '05's, I THINK it's around 40-42 psi or so. If you put a boost elbow on, you need a way to ensure you don't exceed the safe limits of the turbo, so that you won't overspeed it and cause it to sling apart. Also, if the intake system develops a leak, you'll have less boost to cool combustion, but won't know it without a boost gauge.

That's a synopsis of why you need a boost gauge.
