Tool Box Recommendation

Looking for a tool box for the back behind the cab one that rests on the side wall of the bed that run parallel to the rear window. Would like a deep box but I have a short box. What brand is best made and do you have to drill to mount! Any feed back is appreciated.

I tried a Better Built deep toolbox and sad to say it doesn't fit. The box is so far forward that the lid will hit the back window opened only half way.
I have seen toolboxes in catalogs that have beveled bottom edges so it should fit in the short box much better, I think Dee Zee and Trail Boss makes these type of toolboxes.

i have a weather gaurd model 127 saddle box and i love it.!! they are built better than any other box out there IMO. they are pretty deep and do have sliding tray in the top of it. you can store all sorts of cool stuff in there. they are made by Knaack manufacturing co. to check them out go to knaack.com and click on weather gaurd boxes it is model # 127 saddle box I do know they will fit just fine in a short bed, too. OH and no you dont have to drill to mount, just go to a hardware store and get some high strength J bolts with lock nuts and washers

By far the best ones ive seen are weatherguards and ranchhands, however, very expensive.

I have Husky and like it well enough ($250). Ive heard that if you load these to the top the latch/lock can get damaged (never had a problem with mine). Ive also never had a problem with it leaking.

If i had the money though Id get a weatherguard.

I have a old Better Built shallow box with (whole top open door) that I bought new in '93 for the FIRST and LAST Ford I will ever have. I like the shallow box cause you can carry 8' lumber (fence posts) in the bed with the tailgate closed. I moved this box to my '96 CTD and now I have just moved it to my new '04 CTD. I have had to make some minor repairs to it over the years from abuse but it is still one darn good box! It has plenty of room to carry what you need. If you get one to big you just fill it up with stuff you end up carrying around for nothing.

I too was looking for a deep box but it would not fit. I bought a bigger under the rail from Lowes and installed the smaller one i already had in my f-250. they both work great. check out my gallery for a photo

I am going to get these in dark black when they are in stock again.

One on each side. One I will remove a few drawers and put the jumper cables and jack and stuff in it.

I bought a Delta PRo deep box from the local Big R store $269

I wanted a black which they had the day before but my truck ws getting rhion lined. Ended up with bright AL., as the next day Iwas leaving for a hog hunting i9n TX. No drilling the rail/ Drilled the box and put in J hooks. Works great so far. Enough room under the box for a shovel or to slide material etc

Good luck

as mentioned Pro-Tech, rules, they are the best and will last forever. They are spendy but you will never buy another. Mine in 10-12 years old and no problems, I have slept on it, dumped gravel, dirt, sand, manure, and bark on it. It is a really good product.

If they do not have the size that you want they will make one either, L, H,or W bigger.

If you don't mind diamondplate, the RDS toolbox/aux tank combos are sweet, and they also make a variety of regular toolboxes as well. I'd check them out. Fiverbob seems very happy with his.

Does anyone have or have they seen one of these toolboxes? It's called the slide system. They hook to a rail system and slide from front to back. I was thinking this might be helpful for traction over the rear wheels and ease of access.

Slide System

They run between 600-1000. depending on the model. I'm just curious about quality and ease of use. It appears Northen Tool and Sears carries them.

There is also a similar product called the swing box.

I have a Weatherguard Model 127 and it works and looks great on my Dodge. They make a few different models and sizes and seem to be built the best for the construction trade with great locks and bigger gas cylinders for the lid. I have mine loaded with heavy tools and it never leak a bit. Mine came with heavy duty J bolts for easy mounting too.

I have a deep box in an O4 short box it fits fine and is a very nice. It's about 4" from the bed of the truck, just enough to slide my Highlift jack and a shovel under it. It's quality box, this is the site:

I live as far from these guys as is possible in the lower 48 and I had the box 7 days after I ordered it!

Mine is in Black powdercaoted aluminum, it looks nice.
