-must be a fairily safe and stupid proof combination....

Install a full gauge set: boost, EGT, tranny (if auto), etc.
Install your power adder(s) of choice. Their are many to choose from, all with their plusses and minuses. You need to decide what will be best for you.
Be prepared to address the trannsmission if you start adding 100 h.p.+.
This will be controlled by your right foot. But don't bank on much improvement.
Again, this is best controlled with your right foot. But several of the products out there (Quadzilla Commander, Edge Attitude, Bully Dog Outlook, etc.) have built-in safety features that are user set to help keep you out of trouble.
3000 bucks will buy a decent amount of bombs.
ptgarcia gives some good advice and you can probably do all that For less than half what you are willing to spend if you shop around. (unless you get into tranny building)
Just remember - once you start its hard to stop!!

You can do a muffler replacement for about $100. Or do a cat back for about $250. You don't need 5" it's a waste of money. If you don't want the cat, go down to a muffler shop and pay $40 to have it removed. Full exhaust replacement on these trucks is a waste of money. Even your friends at Banks will tell you 5" is a waste.
You don't need a $400+ AFE. Spend about 1/2 that on something else. You'll NEVER notice a hp increase using something that's $200 more. (AirRaid, K&N, etc) It might net you about 3-5hp if you're lucky. Sorry, you'll never feel 3-5hp gain via SOP. And anyone here that knows their stuff can verify that.
Smarty $650 shipped to your door. More power then your truck can handle and room to grow. Plus a TON of other features. Most noticably the fact that the dealer can't see it if you have to go in for repairs. You can check and clear codes, adjust your tire sizes, d/l different software off the internet, etc.
So now you're at about $900-$1000
Oh, what to do with the other $2000....
Torque convertor and valve body will set you back $1500 ($1300 for the TC and $200 for the VB) Leaves you about $500 for the installation of those parts.
So let's put it all together. $3000 nets you about 190-200hp gain at the rear wheels. And you got a tranny to hold it.
Just and FYI. If you do a TC and VB now while your stock clutches are intact and good you won't need to replace them later. By putting a good stong TC & VB in now you're pretty much done unless you want to add a billet shaft and flex plate. Neither which are needed for a 200rwhp gain.

Yea, missed the guages. Sorry my bad. www.dieselmanor.com $279
Install the TC & VB yourself and you still have a few hundered to spare.

I would recomend the Banks PDA you can get it off eBay for $820. You already have a 4in exhaust. So if you want better sound go with a MBRP or the Banks Monster. Do not buy the 5inch exhaust. You will lose low end power with it. A cold air intake is also needed. Banks by far has the best when it comes to protection. They watch the tranny for slipping and sorts of other great safety features plus built in gauges. I bought my truck 5 months ago. A little over a month ago I bought a Quad dzxt2 65hp/190tq and already my tranny is blown. I never towed with it and I never raced it. I didn't even drive it hard. Now I am not blaming the Quad since I only had my truck such a short time. The tranny could have been weak when I bought it and the quad just pushed it over the edge. Who knows. The quad is coming off so I can go to the dealer with the truck. And then the quad is being sold and I am buying the Banks PDA
If your tranny went with the quad it would have went with the banks. The stock 48re is just barely (and not even really) strong enough for stock power. Any mods and you should be looking into tranny upgrades,, I dont care if it is only a 60 hp or a banks 6 gun. The problem with banks, is that they are very overpriced for what you get. They dont (as much as some people will swear they do) provide you with any extra protection then a bullydog with outlook or quadzilla with the commander or edge with the attitude.
I ran a bullydog power pup for allmost 100k Kilometers, (about 60k miles) with no problems, other then I ended up having to do my tranny, but I would have to say that towing was probably more of a contributing factor than the bullydog was. Now I am a little more in tune with whats out there and what they do etc, I personally will probably not ever have any banks on my truck, not because I think they are bad, but that there is much more out there that works better for less money.

I had the big hoss bundle for my 03, ok package, expensive and not near the performance you can get elsewhere. My 03 got run into in my driveway by a drunk, and I ended up selling it. Thats when I got my 06 did some research and found I could get a lot more performance(JUST AS SAFE) as the banks. I would search this site, find a local installer that has done some work for customers on this site and talk to them. They will take care of you. I would also recommend some trans work not matter which direction you go.
I SECOND THE QUAD RACE! I just got done removing a 6gun/spd loader, and installing the Quad race. Night and day difference, the quad fuels much lower in the rpm range and runs the boost about 5-7 psi higher. Both are pressure/timing boxes, get your moneys worth and buy the Quadzilla! Learn from my mistakes, that's what we're all here for, right!
