Stupid NVG5600 vs NVG4500 questions here

How does the 4500 deal with big power compared to the 5600? The 5600 seems so much bigger. With the few 4500 upgrades, can it handle the power a 5600 handles?

Thanx.

Its just NV4500 and NV5600 ain't it? The G is for the G56 or do they have the G in there for the older trannys too?

There are a few guys locally that pull with 4500's and they are holding up really well. Some of them are modded 12v'ers running well over 800HP. There is some inherited issues like the bolt backing out inside and the input shaft but they are both easy fixes. When cash permits I plan on picking up a used one to keep for a replacement.

Some guys do not like the 3rd-4th gear spread while towing. Its not too bad if you ever drove one. You just need to wind up 3rd a little longer before you shift.

Dont get me wrong, I love my 5600 but if it costs a ton to fix up when I nuke it there will be a 4500 put in.

I've had two NV4500 trucks and two 5600 trucks, and I prefer the 4500... fewer shifts, far cheaper/easier to fix, and I dare say every bit as strong as the 5600 for all intents... the 5600 is NOT bulletproof!

Thanx for sharing the info guys. I am not sure if it is NV or NVG. I think it is New Venture Gear.

That's all I've ever heard. I was considering a 5-speed swap for a while with my '03 for some reason. Got tired of all the shifting I guess...

I will say that the 5600 in my '04 is the best shifting one I've ever driven

Actually, when the NV4500 is used in the GM trucks, they refer to it as the NVG4500. Dodge refers to it as the NV4500. Not sure why. Just a useless bit of trivia for you.

NV4500 will last 500K miles if you treat it right.... overfill it by a quart! Mine burned up at 210K due to not lubricating properly. Mechanic said, I don't get it, it was almost clear full of fluid, but the planetary gears were chunked out like no lube getting pulled up. Bearings were all fine, just the gears decided to nuke.

Word for the wise, overfill it! I did and after a few days of smelling gear oil, all is well and it shifts even smoother.
