Straight piped 03' HO?
I am new here, and before posting this question, I have read every thread for 3rd gens. Okay, I know the subject of exhaust is a frequent one here, but I have heard no references of how loud a straight piped (with a 4" pipe, not 3.5" 03' HO six shooter is.
Are we talking stright pipes on Harley at full throttle, or what (because they are obnoxious.) I have an appointment on Monday to cut out my muffler to hear this, with the backup plan of adding a freeflow spiral muffler "to take the edge off if needed."
Will I get an accurate listen with the muffler removed without plumbing the remaining exhaust?

u should, im pretty sure the 3rd gens are almost 4" anyhow.....
however, as im sure uve read, many many people dont really like the sound of the 3rd gens straight piped (to riceish). i dont presonally think so but then again i dont have to live with one everyday lol. it seems your best would be to add a nice free flow muffler but its your decision, cut it off first and see how u like it.
o, and about how loud, i wouldnt worry it wont be harley loud......u only get that with stacks on a 2nd gen, hahaha
good luck
jeff

Re:Straight piped 03' HO?
The 3G's are 3.5 to the muffler and 4 after that. I've heard one straight piped and it's not bad, BUT it's not like the 2G's. I personally didn't like the sound and I chose a 4" system with a muffler (this is after I had two straight piped 2G's). The loudness doesn't bother me (I can't speak for my neighbors) but the sound just isn't right.
All I can say is try it and see for yourself.

does not sound like other diesels sraight piped, but if you put a 5" on it, it definately sounds loud and good. harley might be a bad example, nothing is that loud. a trip to your local large truck parts supplier and you can weld up a muffler replacement. ask a cement truck operator where he gets his truck repaired.

Thanks to those of you who have posted replies.
I am still searching for more references reguarding the tone, volume, and livability with such a modification on a new pickup.
I once heard a 2nd generation which sounded awesome as it pulled away from a light- it sounded like a tractor and mack truck. This is the tone I am going for.
A friend of mine, "Monroe diesel" took me for a spin in his 2nd generation with his 4" exhaust from Rip's and a large intake, but the sound and tone of his exhaust was not to my liking. It sounded good, but not the deep throaty mack truck/tractor sound I am pursuing.
From what I have gathered, straight piping will most likely be too extreme for my liking- so what it a striaght through 4" low back pressure muffler is installed in place of the stock muffler?
Is there anyone in Oregon/ Willamette Valley who has a similar exhaust mod I could hear?
I am obviously striving to replace the deep exhaust tone my previous Dakota had. I love the diesel sound, but as we all are- I am searching for bigger, better, BOMB!!!!
Please post your two cents in my search of utilizing this forum to save wasted money and arguments with the wife over unknown outcomes.
