Stock Air Box Modifications and Pics
Stock Air Box Modifications and Pics
About a week ago I decided to replace my headlights and fogs with Sylvania's SilverStar and SilverStar Ultra's (fog). Since I had to remove the airbox to get at the right headlight, I decided to get out the Dremel and go to town on the factory airbox. You may notice the Dremel had a mind of its own on a few of the holes.
In the end it felt a little more responsive and no additional whistling was noticed from the turbo inside the cab.
I decided not to cut the bottom of the airbox because the car wash I frequent sprays up to clean the underside of the truck and I didn't want water getting on the K&N. I also looked at each side of the airbox before I cut it and the bottom was the dirtiest, so that was another reason I left it alone.
Cost to modify airbox... $0
Cost of K&N air filter... $69
Cost of additional O2... Priceless

Not to RAIN on your parade
, but the Amsoil Nano Drop-In. No oil. No chemical cleaning 100K service life, blow it out every 25K with shop air.
High flow, high filtering capability...Whew. Only costs $37.00 bucks..
I would also caution you on possible water ingestion with that air box mod...
Good Luck and Happy Motoring....
Now you need a Cool Hose...www.dieselpowerproducts.com

However, why do you think it's possible for water ingestion with my setup? Many of the air intake kits have NO box around them and are completely open.
The idea for this came from my ATV days when I'd do the same thing to the factory airbox. I just cant figure out why my truck won't wheelie now?
I have seen quite a few air box mods on this web site and other places but yours is definately unique.
I cut a 4" hole in the bottom of mine and attached a dryer hose to the bottom leading out in front of the wheel well. I have gotten at least 1.4MPG (depending on if I can keep my foot off of the skinny pedal) better since I did mine about 6 months ago. Hopefully you will see the same if not better but keep us posted.

Im no expert, and this set up does looks cool, but its going to pull in all the hot air from the engine compartment and make the turbo and your EGT's even hotter that with the stock setup. This could actually be bad for the truck.

Look at the S&B or Volant's, they have holes for air intake facing the fender and the rad support. I'd lok at cutting those areas only and/or some ducting going down to the area in front of the wheel like mentioned above.
We go down lotsa dry dusty logging roads in the summer on our fishing trips, I think a 'closed' system is the only way to go.
I had a K&N on my old Ford, that whole cleaning and oiling is a pain in the a$$.

So the question remains... less air that's cooler, or more air that's warmer?
I'm not so sure that the warmer air in the engine compartment is such a big deal (keep in mind that it continues to get cool fresh air as well) since we're running intercoolers that cools the air before it enters the engine. And given the fact the air entering the intercooler is already sitting at 500 degrees, I'm not completely convinced the opened airbox is making much of an impact temperature wise.
