Question Stock 48re Questions

Two questions for the people that are much more in the know than I.

1.) I can't seem to find a simple rundown of the improvements and changes made that created the 48re and that separate it from the 47re. Maybe the search function just doesn't like me.

2.) Again after much fruitless searching I have not found any good discussions about how much HP/TQ above stock the 48re can handle. I have done tons of searching in the past for the 47re and it seemed that the general consensus was that anything over 60-70hp and 180-200TQ was the max for the average joe who doesn't ever really tow and uses his/her truck as a daily driver.

Maybe this thread will get some debate going, maybe it won't. Either way i'm sure i'll learn something about the 48re, since if haven't already guessed i'm doing some homework prior to the start of some bombing.

Mike

Go to the DTT website and look around, Bill has made some comments and observations about the transmission.

This is my first Dodge/Cummins so I dont really know any comparison to the 47re, but this is what I have tried.

I have 4x4 3.73 LSD and 48re with 315/70R/17s. I have had an 85hp/160fpt fuel box, the Juice/Attitude max 100hp/250fpt box and the Xzillaraider max 130hp/230fpt box on the truck. So far I have not broken anything. I do not run on the 130hp setting except for Dyno and test run. I could make the trans slip a little on the Juice 100hp setting and on the Xzillaraider 100hp setting.

My guess is the 48re would handle any 80hp mod with no issues, anything over that could possibly be fatal depending on power brake boost launches or just childish driving habits that sometimes creep into my right foot.

Id like to know as well. Its been awhile since Ive seen a thread on this (if there is one, someone point me in the right direction), especially now that the 48re's have been out for over 2 years.

Im seriously thinking about the Xzillaraider but dont have (or want to drop) 3K for a new tranny.

I know that with dyno readings in the 700-720rw torque range I can make the TC slip with just a standing WOT or from cruising WOT. The 800 figure may be referring to fly wheel and not rear wheel. I certainly don't know for sure, but I plan on TC/VB/Inpug shaft upgrade before I find out.

The 48re is a larger version of 47re with whole lot of improvements
Planetary gears are larger and are steel no longer alumnium.
Front clutch has five disc as 47re has four.

As for me when I added chip and propane it was too much for tranny whole lot of RPM's but whole lot of slipping too. Tranny had no idea what too do with added power.
I notice tranny would not hang so I had DTT build a neck brace needed Tranny!
Very cool operating tranny now totally different.
MPG went up 40-50 mph range.

Your 48re will hang with chip etc but don't expect to be on drag strip every weekend.
All the slipping will soon burn her up!

I hope mine will handle next mod's 95hp injectors and twin turbos.
