Stack my Smary Jr. or sell and buy Sr.

On a 2006 Dodge Cummins I tow 14,000 lbs occasionally but mostly unloaded. I drive for fuel mileage 99.8 % of the time. Since I drive for MPG I use high Hp settings for DD with a very lite foot. Since my truck is basically stock and the weight I tow is extreme I use a very lite foot getting up to speed while towing with a max of 70 Hp extra.

I have a Smarty Jr. and have a question maybe some can answer. This is just for MPG increase as I believe I know how to keep my transmission living by using diligent use of throttle so no "how to drive lessons please".

I want to add a little rail pressure in hopes of a little better MPG.
Would it be better to stack my Jr with some thing like the MP-8 or sell my Jr. and buy a Sr. which does pressure?

Please explain why you made your choice.

Thanks,

P.S. If anyone knows the rail pressure PSI on the smary Sr. rail pressure settings 1,2,3,4 could you also please include them for my personal references.

Thanks again,

ON EDIT: I forgot to add I have an EGT gauge.

I started out with the smarty junior on my truck. The best mpg I was ever able to get was mid 17's. With the sr pod, so far the best mpg I have gotten is 19. Both of these numbers were driving I 80 in between Laramie Wy, and Omaha, Ne running at 1900 rpm. Is 1-2 mpg worth the extra money for the sr and pod? Who knows. But I love all of the settings and adjustability it gives me. Every other time I drive that route I change the settings.

I have never stacked anything with the jr or the sr, so I am no help there.

Do you run the pod on the jr or just the standard software?

I can tell you my experience with the Smarty So6. I tried to tow my 13K 5er on level 3 with the most timing for better milage. I had too much timing rattle especially pulling small hills I would lose power. I backed off the timing and it did better. The best towing I had with the Smarty was with the 4.11, level 3, mod torque management, but then I have trans upgrades. I have beta 4.4 that I want to try but it will probably be this summer. I am concerned because the betas are wild TM.

I just went back to the Smarty Jr after stacking it with my Quad X2. The senior is a big upgrade with adjustability and power added and its much stronger than the Smarty Jr. stacked. however i decided i'm not going for ton's of power just some extra for daily driving and adding pressure for a little milage.

I am still pleased with switching back to th Smarty Jr stacked with the Quad, its puts down perfect amount of power i need with a max temp of 1300*. I agree about the timing issue with the Smarty Sr. even on my Quad on stack I would get a nasty rattle from anything but stock timing.

I have had various tuners and have seen my best milage with the Smarty jr. stacked right now im at about 20-22mpg on highway, but i never tow. Also i lov the new Quad X2 adjustablilty, gauges and updateable to whatver tune i'd like, than with the REVO st it so i can run the two as i choose.

the main reason i chose to stack though was bcause i needed a boost fooler on my 06 (you MAY need it also depending upon your truck.) So for the $100 difference it was more worth it to get some extra power.

If it was more i'd stay with the Smarty Jr. and stack with something that does rail prssure as the Senior only changes the Rail pressure ramping(how quickly it raises).

PM me if you want to know anything else as i was in the sam boat as you....

I havent towed yet so i cant tell you sorry...But for daily driving i keep my Smarty Jr. on timing 4 for fuel economy and tq 2 which really compliments the Quad X2 and i use the stack tunes.
I really like the MPG stack tunes because it seems to adjust for higher RP if you want. I either run the MPG tune or PL02. I know the MPG tune sounds like it would cause to much timing but i havent heard anything from it yet which kind of makes me wonder, but i do see a drop in RP from PL02 to PL01 which is MPG.
I was thinking about switching over and using the Quad for timing but i still like the way the Smarty feels with it and i think it does more timing and its programmed in instead of quick altering than the Quad does.
I know this wont help you since i dont tow but my EGT rarely get above 700* and amazes me sometimes as to how low it will be (450-500 at 70mph.) But WOT temps go up to a max of 1300* and is barely smokey at all which is why i like the stack tunes they seem to help clear up the smoke nicely with the extra timing you throw at the engine through the Smarty.

Thanks Jiggerman,

I think I understand, Smarty on 100hp and Quad ON PL1
for milage and sometimes you turn the pressure up to PL2.

Thank you to shortbed rv, jiggerman78, and stovetop535.
According to what you guys are telling me is what I personally want (sr.) maybe is not the best when I tow. I do have a original xzt I could send in and have the stack program put in it.

Long story short I bought the original xzt and used it for awhile, was o.k. then I bought the smarty Jr. original and sent the xzt to have the stack program put in it. The original Jr. and xzt made good MPG but was too wild for towing 14,000 lbs with a stock transmission so I sent the xzt back into quadzilla and had the original program reinstalled so I could sell it. Well I thought I would try it out before selling it. It does nothing but throw codes now so I just chucked it up on the shelf where it has sat for a year now. I know I should have sent it back right away but got bussy/lazy with other things and felt a little foolish sending it back and forth so just forgot about it. Now with the Jr. adjustability it looks like I should reserect the xzt and call quadzilla and see what we can work out.

Thanks for your time and listening, you've all helped alot.

I have the JR. stacked with an EZ. I started out with an EZ thinking I could stack it with the SR. later. This was before any REVO sofware came out. Then as I got used to the EZ ( I ran it on 1 and 2). I figured I would get a Jr. for now and upgrade to the SR. after I get a built tranny. Well still saving for the tranny.

I mainly run the JR. on 2 ( tow) with TM4 and TQ2 and the EZ on 1. I have no problem breaking it loose. My dyno #'s are with both on level 3 with JR pre-revo.

As far as MPG--I don't know. I don't hand calculate it anymore. Just go by the overhead. Each tank is around 16-17mpg mixed city/hwy. I also pull a lot of hills around my house.

Towing-- I haven't towed with JR. yet. The EZ by itself gave me some low end response with not much difference in EGT'S than stock.

Hope this helps.

Thanks shagginwagon, always looking for more information. I'am still undecided if I should keep the Jr. and stack it or sell the Jr. and buy the Sr.

shagg in wagon or shagenwagon are you from the era?
