pour some alcohol on your hand that is room temp and feel how cold your hand gets... it takes the heat with it when it evaporates

run a google search on "latent heat of vaporization"
That is the effect you feel. The guys out west really know this effect. They can run an evaporative cooler on a 120 degree day and stay cool, us in the south just get wet.
