Smarty or TST?

I hope this questions is not too redundant. I looked and did not find this exact question...

Looking for better mileage and the ability to eat a rice burner here or there when necessary. (or a D-max or my wife's 7.3 Excursion--bought used, it's ridiculously quick)

Would you recommend a Smarty or TST first? (as in only one box for now, with the hope to do more later) And why?

If you want to win a drag race go with the smarty, it gives you great low end power. The EGTS do get hot and you do need a pyro!! When I pull a trailer the smarty is off because of high egts!!

The TST comes with the gauges but really doesn't kick in until 16-1700 rpms. For me the TST is better because I tow a lot and the TST you can set egt limits so you don't have a melt down. And I don't have to stare at a pyro gauge.

I never noticed any better fuel economy with the TST, even on economy. The Smarty however is the only thing I've ever installed on my truck that did actually net an increase in mileage. Go with the smarty and some gauges.

jlibert,

I notice in your signature, that you run the TST R-49 without pressure. Did you have a special flash or is that an option that can be turned on and off?

Thanks!

One thing to keep in mind is the TST is a box that you can adjust in the cab... the smarty is a downloader. Some folks prefer one over the other just for those reasons alone. However, if you get both, they stack great together!

I had one of the earlier TST models. I had it upgraded to the AP (adjustable program). There was no option to add pressure with my module. Right now I've got enough pressure to run Smarty on 8, tst on 2/1 and keep the rail above 21k.
