Smarty timing rattle
Looking for some clarification on this. Everybody says not to worry about it, but I'm wondering if they are just saying that to put themselves at ease. I'm fairly new to the diesel arena, but know that timing rattle like that in a gas motor would lead to disastrous results. Can somebody chime in here with some educated info? Thanks all.

I also feel the timing rattle is a little agressive. I know too much timing can lead to problems but not sure how much is too much.
Whats happens when you run the software without timing not stacked? I assume mileage would drop and smoke increase. Not trying to steal thread just curious. Diesel experts please chime in.

I've heard too much timing causing big problems but I have no idea how you are supposed to know when its too much. I would hope that no single power adder would have enough extra timing to cause a problem. Stacking would be the place where too much timing could have expensive results. At least thats how i look at it, which means basically nothing.

The timing on the 3rd gens is dynamic so it's hard to tell when it's too much. But with a some amount of timing helps with increasing the power and lowers the EGTs. Heck, our trucks is still quieter than the 12v and older 24v Cummins when it comes to timing rattles. 
If you're concern with the rattle can always load the aftermarket injector program since Marco backs off the timing a little to compensate for the timing advance that larger injectors bring.

#1 egt's are an indication of what is going on in the cylinder. since we have no accurate way of measuring cylinder temp, we use egts.
that being said, lowering egts via timing just hides the heat in the cylinder(in a manner of speaking) just means that more heat is staying in the cylinder, yes it makes more power, but gives you a false feeling of security.(at this point you really need to watch the coolant gauge) "Oh, my egts went down 200* so i can add 1 more level on the power adder." NOPE. gotta still do things within reason.
THAT being said, 99% of these trucks will not cause damage by running setting that their tranny's can handle. running level 9 on a smarty without towing will be fine for most of you. stacking 2 modules, running big rubber, and injectors, then you need to know what you are doing.
i have run 2 timing components(smarty on odd numbers and tst) with no problems. i have run smarty and quad race with no problems.
just gotta do your homework and use your head.

So the egt drop I've seen vs stock are false readings and not that much different than stock egts. Are there any advantages to running sw 2 without another box? I have been wanting to try it but would like to hear from others that have done it.
