Smarty Prep

Starting to accumulate the hardware necessary before purchasing and uploading the SW from a Smarty JR.

My 2005 NV5600 truck has the intercooler with plastic side panels. I believe the Smarty SW does boost fooling, so the first questions are:

1. What is maximum boost likely to be with totally stock truck? Where does this occur?

2. With Smarty SW installed, what will the increase in boost #'s be, if any?

3. From experience, at what pressure might the plastic panels fail?

I'm thinking one of the first purchases should be a combo boost/egt gauge set in a single pod A-pillar from Geno's. Installed before uploading Smarty SW to see what's what. I'm wondering if 35psi boost is enough gauge. I do not plan to ever stack, or install aftermarket injectors or turbos.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You'll be fine with all your stock parts. Boost levels differs from truck to truck but expect to see around 40 neighborhood... maybe a little more.

35 certainly not enough boost gauge. Think 50-60psi gauge.

For the 600's get the 50psi combo gauge. Wish I had bought the 50psi version since installing the SMARTY and boost elbow.

I would be concerned with the stock aftercooler. It's common to blow the plastic ends off running higher boost.

The paperwork that comes with the smarty says level 5 is the highest on should go w/o an aftermarket clutch.

You will enjoy it.

Reading it initially, I thought he was loading Smarty JR... my post was based on that. Smarty JR only has levels 1,2,3.

So... are you saying you are upgrading to regular smarty??

I believe the Jr. level 3 is equal to the level 5 Sr.

That is correct!! The point for the poster being that if it is Smarty Jr. it is designed for the stock truck and he shouldn't have to worry about other upgrades he is speaking of. (Than gauges of course) But if it is Smarty "sr" than that is a different story.

Smarty JR it is.

Two of them...one as an XMAS gift for my business partner who has a 04.5 auto 2500SB.

I was sort of thinking of sneaking the upload in on him one morning and then suggesting we take his truck out for lunch.

Yep... Should be hoot.

He's often talked about "chipping" but is not a techie at all. Something as intangible as software (magic), would be just that.

Actually, this is long overdue payback. He's a good business partner. Puts in a lot of hours and effort.

The lift pump in that truck is about shot. Loud as heck and runs forever. Truck surges on the last half of long uphill grades. Getting the 05 in the tank warranty repair on the 11th. After that, it's fair game.
