Smarty Jr and tranny upgrade questions

I've had the Jr for a while now and the truck is out of warranty now also. I really like the extra power the jr provides, but I dont trust the tranny to be reliable in the 100 hp setting... especially when towing.

I havent slipped the tranny yet, mostly because I know its limitations and I dont push it. But the time has come where I'd like to be able to actually use the power thats available.

I have done some searching and found some answers, but I wanted to find out more.

My question to you all is...what do I need to do to my tranny to make it bulletproof at the Jr's highest setting, including towing 11K at the highest setting? Thanks for any input.

If you want bullet proof call Dave Goerend www.goerend.com not the cheapest but as far as quality and service I think he's tops. Full billet will do more power than you can run on the street.

There are a lot of threads on this. The general consensus is that you will need a good torque converter and valve body or Transgo shift kit to boost line pressure.

Because of the stress of the added line pressure, it would also be a good idea to replace these parts with stronger billet parts:
Intermediate band strut, anchor, and the pivot.
Front servo cover (for better sealing)

I will be doing this soon for the same reasons you are. I am also going to run a billet input shaft for peace of mind. It's not hard to find posts from guys who broke theirs.

You should also upgrade the flex plate while you're in there. A Haisley insert is plenty strong.

A good torque converter and valve body at the least, along with the few small suggested billet upgrades, servo, straps, etc. That setup should hold up to 500 hp according to Dave Goerend.

A quality valvebody will help alot. If you add a tight converter and an aggressive valvebody you are gonna want a Billet Input shaft because the 48re shifts locked from 3rd to 4th. My trans builder doesn't go super aggressive on just his valvebodys because he has seen input shafts break with just the valvebody upgrade.

I havent installed my Jr, but plan to in the morning,,, will be towing around 12K but dont think I will need the max settings as I have a manual tranny with a new stock Clutch,,,,, dont want to slip it either,,,,,,

Thanks for the replies...

Speaking of costs, approximately how much bread am I talking for a decent TC, valve body, and all the billet upgrades mentioned above that would be needed to make it strong? If anybody has any ideas as to costs, could you estimate approximate labor also? I dont have the tools nor facility to do this work.

I'm trying to get a round about idea of how much its gonna cost to get the above items done.
