Guessing sw3 will give you the best mileage, you will just have to stay off the skinny pedal as much as you can. I didnt like how my '06 shifted with sw3 and dropping the POD, so I went to SW2 and kept a higher POD number. Just seemed like it was holding the gears a bit to long before going into OD around town, driver preference. I do roughly 90% city driving.

If you are doing alot of highway driving or over 55 I would use SW3. Gives you the best timing and duration. Where are you at? Fill out your signature. If it is pretty cold I would just use default timing now and crank it to max when spring comes. My '06 is kinda rough running in this 35 degree weather here in indiana about this time.

I loaded sw2 today just as a starting point. It said towing. It does so well I`m wondering if I even need to change anything. I thought I would want stock tq management but the way I drive I like whatever default is. Maybe after a few days I`ll play around with it. Oh yeah, it smokes less than stock.

Hi guys-
So I put my Jr on SW1 (30hp) POD at 99 - and no smoke, and mileage is roughly the same, maybe a hair better... but I still have the original/stock NV5600 clutch at 122k and I'm wondering... should I do anything different? Right now I am not towing...
And smoke would be fun but not necessary. Mileage is the big one here for me... mind chiming in guys?
Thanks!

Talking Smarty Jr. First Impressions

AH64ID and mjf6175, I thank you!!

I picked up my first junior on Wednesday (thanks again XXLTEXAN, really appreciate it!) that had some old 5.00 software on it. Wouldn't even recognize my truck's software version, so I hopped on MADS' site and grabbed the latest 5.11.

For yesterday I ran SW2 TQ2 TM4 and it was a riot. Spinning all the way through 2nd gear and bellowing black clouds everywhere. Fun for 24 hours, but I couldn't help but wonder how my tranny felt... and how my pocketbook was going to hurt at the next fill up.

Anyhow, I read all the way through this (and a few other threads) trying to soak up as much info as I could. Thank you BOTH very much for putting all this info in one place. I took your two threads and merged them into a document I printed on one piece of paper (front and back) and folded it up to keep with the Smarty JR. in the truck. Anyhow, I popped SW1 TQ4 TM2 in at lunch (with PoD set to 40) and wow. I can now see how this will help save some fuel!! Even with no timing, the PoD would be awesome! I think it'll take some getting used to, but should be fun. Keeps the RPMs up in the powerband with <5-6 lbs of boost. Just gotta be careful to not pull out in front of someone expecting the go peddle to work like I've become accustomed to.

Anyhow, thanks again. Here is the aforementioned document for others as my way of paying it forward.

You gotta try SW3! Even if it is just for a good run around the block. I loaded straight to the SW3 and have been messing with the TQ and TM settings along with POD. Love it so far!!

I've had my Jr about a week. I loaded SW2 def def and loved the way it drove. I was still on 5.09. So I downloaded 5.11B last weekend and went to try out SW1 and SW3. I've tried SW3 on TM4 TQ2, TM4 TQ4, and TM2 TQ2. Now granted these were for quick jaunts, but to me SW2 Def Def seemed to have more power. I haven't tried TM4 on SW2 yet, TM4 is smoking on me a little bit when I lug it or get on it, not sure if I like it that way or not.

Does anyone know what the hp and torque curves are for the different tunes. I tried SW1 TM4 Def and didn't care for it, I was wondering if the SW2 has the power and torque in a lower power range than the SW3.

Also is it beneficial to return the truck to stock before updating Smarty versions?

I bought the truck with 75K and now have 122K, and I haven't changed the clutch and not sure if it was done prior, so I'm wondering if that is wearing a bit and might be why SW3 isn't giving me quite the seat in the pants feeling that SW2 is. So far I'm keeping the POD on 99.

I haven't played much with anything but SW1, couple of hwy trips on 3 to check mileage, and never ran 2.

I haven't dyno'd since the SW2 glitch was fixed, but the bottom end power on 3 came on much harder than 1, for obvious reasons... Remember SW1 is stock fueling.

TM4 does yield the best mileage, power, and EGT's, but the smoke is excessive and the soot loading in the oil really increases. I stick to SW1, TM2, TQ2. Has all the power I need for how/where I tow, and the mileage is good and the EGT's are better.. If I am driving smart (i.e not trying to accelerate towing up a 7% grade in 4th at 2700+ rpms) I don't even brake 1175* on the pyro unless its above 80* outside.

No you don't have to go back to stock to change Smarty versions.

I would love to try a Smarty Jr, as I hear so many positive comments about them. But all this confusing stuff in this thread has me shying away and keeping the Hypertech Max Energy.

I have had the Hypertech for 2 years, it has the same advertised hp/tq gains as the Smarty Jr, and is easy to work with. I haven't had a lick of trouble with it. I tow an 11500# 36' 5th wheel RV, and use the middle setting.

I'm considering selling the Hypertech and trying the Smarty Jr. Or buying a Smarty Jr, and keeping the Hypertech, then selling the second place finisher after I try both.

I guess I'm a bit nervous about all of the different settings with the Jr, and don't want to mess anything up.

I tow in the mountains alot, and my truck is stock otherwise, and I still have warranty left.

Comments? Suggestions?

Smarty has a 30 day money back guarantee... Buy one before your next trip. Run SW2 and the settings on default (default works for 99.9% of users) and see what you think.

Are you running a pyro?

No pyro, and no more warranty. I have also beefed up my trans, billet tq, new VB and other new parts in anticipation of more power mods. Still worried about towing heavy in the mountains. Haven't had a lick of trouble with the Hypertech.

I appreciate your knowledge on the subject AH64ID

I would add a pyro!

How do you know what the EGT's were on the hypertech to know if there was an issue?

Towed the RV up every grade in the Canadian Rockies and NW USA for the past 3 years with no issues. I figure if there was an EGT issue, I would have melted something by now! Everyone seems to post about how the EGTs are cooler with the Jr anyway. I didn't want to add a pyro while I was under warranty.

My dealership added my pyro, so not a huge deal.... The Hypertech leaves a signature anyways, so there went any motor warranty.

How do you tell which software version you have on your Smarty?
