My question exactly.

Especially since my situation with them having to send me a housing....or just a complete 66.

I have the SPS66 w/ 14 cm2 housing. The previous turbo was an HTB2 62mm/14 cm2.

I haven't noticed the symptoms of surging yet. I only tow up to 8,000 lbs and when I did, I purposely dropped the rpm down to where people normally experience surging to try to get it to surge and it didn't. I wonder if 6-speed and cam help with manipulating the boost and consuming the excess air, respectively?

Switching to the SPS 66, while keeping similar injectors and the Edge Juice box yielded about 30 more HP, but 60 rpm later in the power band due to the slower spool as detailed here:

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...d.php?t=143838

The only thing that took a while to get over was to not bark the SPS 66, but I think that quite a few people experience this when switching turbos (no matter what the brand) until they get used to the turbo's idiosyncracies. Driver seat time took care of this for me.

Hope this helps you out!

I have had the SPS66 turbo installed for 7,000 - 8,000 miles now. I don't tow anything heavy enough to matter so I don't know if that would change anything. I have not had any surgeing of any kind. I keep my boxes at about 100hp over stock for normal daily driving. That helps compensate for the extra lag time of the SPS66. I to have had to learn how to drive to keep from barking my turbo. Still barks sometimes on heavy throttle, but not often now. My stock turbo barked about the same places after the TD and Transmission upgrades.

They are good turbos, but an informed decision is the best decision. Both of the 66mm turbos that are available are performance turbos and the characteristics that cause surge are there in both of them. One may say "never any surge" and another may say "surges so bad it is useless". What you tow and how you tow seems to play a big part in whether you experience surge or not. The 66mm turbos will surge when towing if the conditions are right. Some people are lucky and don't find those conditions every time they hook, and some people do. Whether you go with II or HTT, you could always try a 66 and if you are one of the unlucky ones, have them turn it into a 62. Both companies will do that for you. It will cost you, but at least you have options.

Here are some links to threads where they talk about the 66's surging. I just did a quick search and posted a few. There may be more info out there if you have time to look for it. You can see that some have it and some don't. It is a crap shoot:

I think alot of has to do with driving style and experience.
For alot this is their first diesel truck and their first aftermarket charger.

I dont drive my truck real hard, nor do I try to speed shift or impress anyone with it.
It only matters to me that it hooks well with a sled behind it.

Bingo! For myself, I rarely drive around town or on the highways <1800 rpm - no matter when I was stock turbo, HTB2 62/12, HTB2 62/14, or this SPS66. If my rpm dropped below this I usually was ready to downshift or come to a stop. However, I noticed a few of the people that ask about or experiencing surging are the ones that state they are in the <= 1800 rpm range a lot. I will be getting my new-to-me car trailer this week so I'll get to put some ample towing time on it in the next month or so.

Listen to this man - lots of wisdom! If I would have listened to his posts I would have had twins by now, instead of playing turbo roulette with all the incremental costs that add up over time. For me, it's just the upfront cost of twins that shock me - nothing more, nothing less - I'm just hoping that the SPS66 can be used in a twins configuration down the road if I ever get there.

Well, darn the poll is closed! Anyhow, I wanted to change my vote to going to a 62 as it is the best for MY NEEDS. Read about it here and follow the link in this thread for my SPS 66 towing experiences.
