Sled Pulling Questions?

There are some local pulls coming up and I want to try my luck with a sled. I was wanting to know what gear I should pull in? I know it probably depends on how heavy the sled is and track conditions. I was just wanting to hear some suggestions. I was thinking 3rd in low range. My friend said second gear in high range cause of my higher powered truck, but I think pulling in high would be too hard on the truck. Also how do you boost up a manual trans truck? That might be a stupid question, but I asked it anyway.

Well if your worried about being hard on a truck id prolly wouldnt pull a sled lol but anyways id pull in 3 low. when your building boost, make sure the chains tight and use your left leg for the clutch only and i use my right foot to hold the brake and push the throttle at the same time. start holding the brake and push the acc pedal down, start letting out on the clutch and then she will start building boost(keep in mind your raising rpms as you let out on the clutch). Im not no pro by no means, this is just what works for me. And this is alot of stress on the entire truck as well so you might expect some breaks or things weakening and lowing the life of your vehicle.good luck

It is not a timed event. When you get the green flag use the tension on the chain, spool up, clutch out/ throttle, Go! Ease into the sled (to a point).

I think the dd will not handle the 2nd gear launch. depending on what gear ratio you have in the differentials you might get away with 4th gear. I use 2nd high on a nice loose track and run 5th gear low on tight packed tracks. Also to build boost bring the rpms up and then slowly let out on the clutch. Also you might want to check with your local clubs about your twins. They might stick you in my class with the modified trucks

5th low at your power level. My buddy has 583hp nv5600 and he pulls 5th low, very good track speed.

I dont think he has enough clutch to pull 5th gear and 35" tires. the 3850 DD lasted 5 pulls in my 01

To get your feet wet, id would pull 4th low, your first couple of hooks, like said ^^. A stick wont build alot of boost at the line, but yes, use the force of the sled to build your boost.I get my rpms, about 3000, and slowly start letting the clutch out, boost will come up, quick, your trading one pedel for the other.

I didn't say his clutch would last forever. In my area, you either pull the big gear or finish back of the pack.

I agree but why tear up his daily driver to pull in a gear that he does not have the mods to pull in. My 3850 clutch lasted so short of a time frame was due to being over powered on the track. Dan told me it was only rated for 800 hp

It has alot to do with what gear is in the truck. 3.73's 4lo 3rd gear not bad but 4.10's in 3rd gear 4lo is way to low. With 3.73's 3rd or 4th gear ok 4.10's 4th or 5th is good.

Thanks for the info guys. I now have a 3600lb pressure plate. I know it's not meant for hardcore pulling, but I'm not a hardcore puller. I just want to hook to a sled a time or two to see what it's like. I'll probably try 3rd or 4th in low range and go from there. My buddy pulled in a local event last year with a lifted Meg cab dually with 35s and a stock clutch and got 6th out of 25, so I think I will be ok.
