Running an open turbo at the track?

I've seen it on cars, and I hear that sled pullers do it... can you do it on a daily driver just on the track? Would you leave the tube on, and just take the air box top off, or take the intake off at the turbo?

Just thinkin...

TIA!!!

Does it really gain you anymore air??? I feel that with the stg2 AFE proG 7 I should have plenty enough air JMO. Turbos arn't cheap and I would think even a small amont of dirt would do some sort of damage.

It would be my luck I would suck dirt or something into the turbo while pulling on a dirt. I think running down the track (blacktop) would be ok.

Why dont you make a couple of passes one with the intake in place and the other with out, I don't think you will see a difference.

Please post results.

Almost everyone that competes full-bore has open turbos. Even at the sled pulls where theres tons of dust and dirt flying around it doesnt seem to be a problem. Personally I would take a piece of screen from the porch door and a big hose clamp to make a big chunkie catcher.

Just install a big enough air filter and you wont see much difference.

Or just having a big cone filter to stick over the turbo inlet...but really it won't see much difference.

Stocker. Currently, I am looking for a single...

When I get the twins or the single, I am going to probably go to a large cone style filter.

and just three weeks ago madhat was gettin on to me about runnin no filter on the sled track, and down the road to test my new silver62. It will certainly sound alot meaner. I left the AEM tube on it because i figured dirt would be harder to get in the CAI box than straight into the turbo. and spoolup may seem marginally better.
