Ran out of fuel

Well, I made a big mistake this weekend. I was heading to the lake pulling my bass boat. The lake is about 20 miles away from my house and I thought I could make it to the gas station by the lake. I was about a mile away, going about 65 mph on the highway when I felt the power loss. I was lucky and instantly got off the highway, the truck gave me a few more revs and then completely died. I was amazed how far it rolled after it was done, especially with the bass boat behind it. The power steering cut off and I somehow managed to turn into a parking lot, which was even harder.

I was immediately worried about losing the prime. My brother brought me 2 gallons worth of diesel. Of course, this wasnt enough. So he had to make another trip and get me 3 more gallons. The manual says you need about 5-10 gallons to prime the engine again. Well, it took me about 35 minutes of doing the procedure in the manual over and over again. Finally, she cranked. I drove about .25 miles to the next station and filled up.

Needless to say, dont run out of fuel on a diesel truck. They dont like to start after that. Any other concerns I should have or look out for after this incident?

Huh, that's strange; I ran the '05 out of #2 last year during testing (kind of on purpose ), and after putting a couple of gallons in, we got prime within 10 seconds to the IP, and the engine fired off right away.

p.s. your right about steering the beast with the engine off!

I think if you could have turned it off as soon you heard it dying it may have been easier to start, that's if you could and still steer.

I would thin you could just bump the starter a few times to refill the lines just like when you do the fuel filter

I tried to turn my old vette off once driving down the road because i thought the engine was having problems (hit a bump and riped the front valince or whatever its called off and it made a wicked noise) the steering wheel locks because i turned the key of so i slamed the breaks and after 60 feet of skid marks and almsot hitting a road sign it stoped, make sure you dont dont turn the key so far back that the steering wheel locks...

Bump the starter? Why not just cycle the key several times? When I installed my GDP lift pump I just cycled the key maybe 6 times and the truck started right up.

I just changed my fuel filter and turning the key didn't seem to help. I had to bump the starter for the fuel to start to move

It sounds like you didn something wrong.

I ran out of fuel on my 99 3 times in 6 months and became a pro at cracking 3 injector lines and firing it back up.

I heard that these 3rd gens fire back up w/o much problems and dont even have to pop the hood and get dirty.

What is the difinitive procedure for running out of fuel???

Should I re-crank the engine once it dies??

Or just leve it and fill it up and cycly the pump 6 times???

Same with me, maybe the crapy stock pump wont supply it with as much as our GDP kits?
