I had the regular tow XZT and had it upgraded awhile back and not sure what it's called now. Then went on line and downloaded the max mileage tune on #1. It doesn't seam to preform any better than before. What are these city tunes and highway you talk about?

Thanks for taking the time to write this report for us!

Alcorr,

When you go to the Quadzilla website for down loads the max milage mod has 4 programs currently available. 1 "utility" 2 "MPG" 3 "BOOST FOOLING" and 4 "MPG CITY"

The " MPG" is also refered to as the Factory setting. When I talked with a tech at Quadzilla he also refered to it as the Highway setting. This is the program I refered to as the "Highway" setting. Sorry, I should have used the "MPG" title. I believe I have read on this forum somewhere that this is the same program Quadzilla is calling the MPG setting on the XZT and others. But I'm not sure about that so you should probably call Quadzilla to confirm that.

The "MPG CITY" is to "help with milage gains for city stop and go driving". When I talked with the tech he indicated that this program improved performance in the lower (up to 1700 rpm ) range, while the factory "MPG" setting kicked in at about 1700 rpms to improve performance.

I don't have a good reason for not answering this thread earlier, except I did not see it.

I would have recommended the regular MPG programming for you and not the city_mpg. Which is good because that is what you used! In basically every instance we have tested and recieve reports from the regular mpg file works better for towing than the "city" file.

Here is how that all went down. After testing and a whole bunch of these things went out we had a small percentage of people not seeing gains. I polled a bunch of these people and they were kind enough to respond to give me some data. What we came up with is that some of these people trying to drive for mileage are driving so easy that the module was not actually ever doing anything. To counter this we made the new program where it works at super low RPM's and no boost is required. This allows these guys to drive as normal and still see the improvements. There is nothing wrong with babying the truck but, we had to adjust tuning to accomodate that.

The downside to this is that we now have a potential to use more fuel than the regular programming in some instances. If you drive "normal" you can probably feel a little extra boost in power with the city file that you do not have with the other file. This is a result of us making changes so early. We did not do that originally because in our testing with our "normal" driving we could not get as good of mileage.

So for most people that standard file works best. We just put another option out there so that we could cover all basis.

In your case:

While we were in Utah we had to make an unplanned trip to southern California, 454 miles each way. Using the HWY MPG program on the trip to So Cal I got 20.536 MPG driving 64 to 67 miles per hour. That was driving my wife nuts as the speed limit on much of that route is 70 to 75 and we were being passed by big rigs and motorhomes. My best pervious non towing mpg's under similar conditions and speeds was 19.896 MPG. So the improvement was .64 MPG better than stock. That is only a 3.2 percent improvement.
In this instance you may have been better with the "city" program?? hard to know for sure but, if you were babying the truck big time it may not have given you the full benefit???

This makes perfect sense as I've noticed rail psi rises much faster w/ the city tune, I kinda like it for throttle response, but I can see where it may hurt mpgs..

qzilla, Thanks for the feedback.

Actually I used both the standard "MPG" and the "CITY MPG" programs while towing. One on the trip to Utah and one on the trip back. The MPG program was sligthly better (.243 mpg) than the CITY MPG program. So what your are saying is pretty consistant with my experience.

I will try the CITY MPG program, as you suggested, the next time I go on a comparable highway trip when I am not towing.

So if I am reading you right, this module probably gets better results for "normal" drivers than for guys like me who have already been babying it, driving for MPG's. I certainly fit into that catagory as I bought this truck and a fifth wheel trailer to replace a gas motorhome that was getting 6-7 mpg's.
I had hoped to get 11-12 mpg's towing as reported by many Dodge Ram owners. I haven't got there yet. But I have been driving very conservatively and slowing down trying to get max mpg since I bought the truck.
