Pyrometer install
Ok, I am looking at putting a pryo and I was wondering how hard is it? I asked around and had prices form $100 - $200 for just the drill and tap on the manifold. Any tips or ideas out there to make it easier? I’m just a little worried about the turbo getting shaving in it and blowing it up.
Also what is the tap size a pryo?

Use grease on the drill bit to catch the shavings. I stuck a magnet retrieval tool in the hole after to get any that got away. I doubt the shavings would do any damage on the way past the turbo fins, but I didn't take any chances.

I haven't installed one on my 2006 yet, but I did on my 2001 and it is super easy as long as your patient. I just kept greasing the drill bit every 30 seconds or so and wiping off any shavings. I know there is a good how-to article somewhere on the web and hopefully someone will chime in with it or just do a search on here and you'll find it. Just go slowly into it and take your time.

Just pull the turbo and manifold and get a new turbo while you're at it lol. When I swapped turbos I tapped it while it was all off the truck and put a plug in it for when I do put a gauge in. I did an 01 a while back and just let the truck run while drilling and tapping it. Really isn't hard at all.

Some guys drill it while the truck is running. I don't see the point, just drill it, then tap it. I've done many of them and never had a issue. Those tiny shavings you get from that small hole aren't gonna damage a turbo.

What everyone said is true. Use lots of grease on the drill and tap and take it slow and clean up whenever the drill/tap gets some metal shavings. Whatever shavings is left in the manifold is way too small to do any damage to the turbo when the truck is started as the turbo will not be spinning that fast if at all and will just spit it out.
I was told never to use put grease on the bit. The purpose and design of a drill bit is to pull the shavings away. By putting grease on it you're holding all the shaving there where you're trying to drill. I put a smaller hole first then the final cut. went real slow so the shavings were real small and it came out perfect. This is what I was told and did and it worked fine.
