In the future I may be looking at MSD's propane injection system. Just wanted to know from those who have used it, what, if any, gains in mpg you have seen. Just read an article in a mag that tested a unit out on a 2nd gen that mileage went from something like 16 to 24mpg after install of prop. In order to gain this type of mileage, does the cpu defuel (use less diesel) because extra propane takes it's place???
I don't have the msd but do have propane injection and mpg gains are not that much mine about 1-2 mpg. Theres no way any diesel will see that much gain. Propane is a vapor-gas and put in the air intake and meter at levels of boost. Small amount at 5 psi boost and full meter amount at 15 psi boost.
It allows full burn of diesel fuel and does not burn on its own. Diesel fuel is only burned at about 80% and causes dirty oil due to blow bye of fuel.
Propane ignites diesel that extra 20% to give you more mpg's and HP's.
And oil is cleaner due to total burn.
I love mine and run it all the time it uses about 20lbs B-B-Q Tank every 40gal diesel.
As Always Never Leave Home Without Propane!
I do most of my grilling threw my Diesel!!!

Actual or Gross gains may be as high as 4-5, but net mileage/savings gains on the average of 1-3 mpg are typically what are seen, on most any vehicle and that is considering the cost of propane and that is ultimately what should be advertised. My 05 with exhaust and intake and propane only sees 2-3 hard fought for mpg's. (after propane cost is factored in) How much propane did the "test vehicle" use to acheive those gains?? A little is good, more doesn't mean better or more power or more mileage. The key is to use a small amount of propane (also safer) to actually realize any $$ mileage benefits.
Propane fumigation should not affect any of the vehicle's monitoring devices. It simply acts with the amount of diesel present.

I run a Powershot 2000 propane system and do not see that much of a mileage gain using mine but I do get the increase in power. I use it mostly for towing. I like and would do it again, in fact it was one of the first things I put on the truck after my guages, intake and exhaust.
trik396,
We have been selling the MSD systems for a pretty good while and the average (after they were the new off of it and quit hot rodding it) MPG seems to be high 1's to 3 MPG. 2 MPG is a good honest average overall. The MSD is so advanced with it's computer system and all the safety features it's been very popular.

As far as the tanks go I tried a forklift tank and I was constantly having to fill it up. I found a place in Hempstead, TX that sold me a used set of 60 Gallon RV tanks for a $100.00 that fit underneath my tool box and now I can fill it up once a month or so depending on how much I drive. It is much more convenient to have bigger tanks if you plan on using propane often.
My mods are in the sig, and I am considering running propane injection.
My main reason for it is slightly better milage, and, slightly better power. I am always looking for ways to increase power....lol

Generally, the use of propane fumigation will clear some of the black smoke up by burning some of that fuel. In a heavily fueled/modded truck it is not as apparent as in a mildly modded one.
If you are looking for a little better mileage (1-3 net) and driveable power(up to around 80-90hp) ,propane is a good option and should work well with your current modifications.
