Possessed gauge?

Possessed gauge?
This morning, after start up my rear diff temp gauge went crazy for a few seconds. It dropped to the 6 o'clock position, then did a 360 clockwise followed by 360 the other way. Did this about 3 times and then started acting normal. 
Fine on the way home tonight.
Hard rain and wind last night, maybe some kind of water related short?
Has this happened to anyone else?
