Pistons or REAL Head work anybody
Pistons or REAL Head work anybody
Anybody on this site run the arias or the other brand of pistons thats avaliable?
What about a fully polished head with the ZZ or other intake?
Does that change the compression ratio?
Also I think on compd or tdr I read that they were no good on a daily driver. But I dont remember why.
I was considering the other engine mods I havnt done yet and just wanted to know whats to be gained. Seeing as how most of the guys on DTR daily there trucks, (unlike some of the other sites) I would post it over here.

aftermarket pistons are too soft for daily driving. They wouldn't hold up to the maintained heat that's created with that kind of driving.
A fully ported head will flow more air but, it's won't change the compression. Shaved pistons is what will do that for you. Lowering the compression helps it run cooler and create more hp at lower rpms.
Porting and boring will change the way the truck runs but, as long as you have some nice matched components, it should run great.

Thats what I was thinking of with the pistons. I couldnt remember why daily trucks dont run them.
On the porting is there any downside except the super high price?
Also Ive never seen a road worthy truck that is FULLY ported running a zz. The only one have had the largest inj. you can get with stacks through the hood or drag slicks.
Is anyone in the cr trucks still fire ringin tha head, seems like this sorta died off.
While your here I thought I would also ask are there any high HP guys runnin the fuel boss( i think?) the belt driven unit that wont enable you to run a fluidampr cuz its too large? I havnt seen any but I dont dig around the other forums as much as I used to.

On the aftermarket pistons one of the biggest down falls is the rings. They use a flat style ring that won't hold up to a whole lot of daily driving miles. Ross says 100,000mi was all I can expext to see out of mine. Schied kept saying ya their aries would be fine and hold up to daily driving but later said pretty much what tritont said. As for the head you do have to remember the more you do to the head the weaker it gets. I just junked a head last spring at Bloomsdale,MO when I melted a motor due to too much timing. i probably had $2000 dollars worth of work from Schied in it. Pressed in oversized valve seats,porting,ect... that the head cracked in 4 spots. To me it was a waste and I didn't do it again. Porting and polishing is great on naturally aspirated motors but remember turbos force feed the air so you still get a little gain but not all that much.
On pistons the best thing you can do with them would be like tritont said lower your compression ratio and open up your ring gap some. My machine shop says my compession is like 15.75:1 now, was shooting for 15 1/2:1.
Also when I talked to Haisley on my 1st motor about the head work they said they had a head there that they had approx $30,000 in head work on,was so thin it leaked in 3 spots and had plugs in them and couldn't see any power difference on dyno.
I don't see where you have a cam. That may be one of your next best steps.

Thanks for the input 2 I was looking for that kind of info. I think last time I tried asking questions about the head porting everybody said just go with a light polish job on the exhaust side and said to forget the intake side. But some days other people see a thread and sometimes people dont so your always getting just a few opinions or like in your case first hand experience.
Also no I havnt done the cam yet thats where im leading towards if my truck ever gets fixed. But I really want to do the cam, springs, and fluidampr at the same time so i'll have to scrimp for a while.
I think I bought some 80 horse sheid injector tips from you. I sold them before I ever tried them. I really wanted to go with F1 stuff and I ultimatly decided not to go cheap.
Your ppe dual fueler is an added duramax cp3 along with the stock unit right?

Yes, that was my injectors and My 2nd pump is a duramax pump. Those 80hp tips were nice but I do like my flux's. As for the dual pumps I wouldn't change them for anything. I think the cam, springs and fluiddamper would make you happy. Just go F1 the first time on the cam and be happy. Also the fluid damper was a nice add on. I don't know if it was balancing the motor or damper or bolth that helped but it is so quiet and smooth now.
Your killing me! Thats funny right there! When I get the bill right then and there its usually not to shocking, its just every time someone tells me that they'll just send it to me when they get it ready and it takes awhile to get it my jaw drops cause the bill always ends up being outrageous.
anything to flow more air is going to benefit you. Even a light port job on the head. I had it done to mine and there is a difference. No, it didn't have the amount of metal removed as a ZZ intake but, there was still quite a bit removed. As mentioned... I also have oversized valve seats along with 14mm studs. No problems so far and from what I understand... as long as the machine work was done correctly... there shouldn't be a problem.
Duramax pumps are Bosch pump just like the Cummins. It's the very same pump just with it's connections in different locations. The newer Duramax pumps now even have the same FCA as a Cummins.
You mentioned the fuel boss.... sweet pump but, IMO... there more benefit from using a Fluidamper. The last time I talked to Richard @ GDP he said there were working on making a boss that can be mounted even with a Fluidamper. Haven't heard more about it though.
Our trucks live on fuel and air. Bottom line.... the more fuel and air you throw at it... the more power you're going to make. IMO.. unless you're looking to race and make unreal amounts of hp.... a light port will be perfectly fine and worth it.
