Exclamation p pump vs cp3

im not to familiar w/ either injection pump, but i hear people talk about a p pump conversion on 3rd gen trucks like its the thing to do. Are there any particular reasons for wanting to swap from a cp3 to a p pump set up? Some one shed some light on this subject for this poor soul....

I think that it is worth it, but im the one that did it. the practical reasons are fuel mileage(this was not a concern of mine) less problematic, more longgevity, and there is always the fun that comes with it. i think it depends on what you do with your truck. if you have any questions fire at will. i would be happy to answer them.

OK, I am new to this Cummins thing, so bear with me. With a P-pump your mileage gets better or worse? And I thought that injectors for the 04.5 and up trucks were just re-done tips?

Thanks in advance, fellas

yes the mileage went up with the p-pump, the injectors in the 03 and newer trucks are electronicly opened. the earlier ones are not.

what about the injectors, did you have to change them or do the stock ones work, how about the fuel rail do you keep it and connect thep pump to the rail or go with a whole new set up,did you by pass the high rail pressure circuit, how do you avoid check engine lights?

i did not put the truck on a dyno, should have there is a lot of performance to be gained b/c the timing can be adjusted to where you need it not where the computer puts it. also there is way more fuel to be had with a p-pump.
the common rail is gone there is a whole other set up used.

the check engine lights are tricky i am woking on getting the rest of them to go away. some die easy some dont.

as for a $, don't have one yet couldnt say it here if i did. ill let yall know when its tallied and you can email or pm me.

thanks

My experience........

I converted my 24V vp-44 truck to a P7100 for reliability and (even though my head told me not) secretly hoped to gain horsepower for sledpulling competition. While the conversion worked it was not something that I wanted to drive longterm or would ever do again. With a stock or hopped up 913 P-pump driveability was decent but not as good as a VP-44. With a hotrod or race P-pump driveability ranged from poor to awful. Remember the P-pump can't adjust the timing for rpm, you can set it for idle, low, mid or high rpm. Our electronic engines run a lot of timing at high loads/high rpm. Set your fixed timing P-pump the same and the engine will hammer and smoke when cold and be a lag pig on the low end. Set a bit above a stock 12 valve and you will see poor horsepower and high end. I talked to scores of CTD owners that converted to P's from across the country and the only ones satified were the ones with very low horsepower trucks and they admitted they would have been as well and usually better served in just buying or swapping in a 12 valve engine. The P-pump converted engine aren't competitive in sled pulling with a SINGLE turbo or no nitrous. If you go to a class that allows twin turbos and/or nitrous the 12 valve is a less expensive and proven way to go.

I find our common rail/electronic engines are very streetable, even at high horsepower and much more fun to drive. My converted 24v took a race pump to substantially exceed 500 horsepower and got 50% less fuel economy in that configuration then my '04 305/555 engine that too is substaitially over 500 hp. Just a heads up.............It costs as much to calibrate or tune up a P7100 at most fuel injection shops as it does to buy a rebuilt VP-44 and you can buy a CP-3 for even less. CR injector costs are a different story............ HTH's

p pumped, what did you do with the new injectors? Did you remove the solenoids or just put 370's in their place or something?

the injectors are the older style, but not 370s.

the above post was correct, timming is fixed on the p-pump. if tuned right though in my mind there is no comparision. as for the fuel mileage i have not heard of many if any people that get better mileage with the cr set up. or if your truck is tuned right for the street i have rarelly heard of anyone complaining about the performance of a p-pump. if your truck is setup for high rpm and lots of fuel it doesnt matter what injection system you have its going to lag on the road. it is all in how you set your truck up, for how you want to use it.

i know that this system isnt for every one but to me its what i wanted and love it.

im not putting anyones truck down by any means so please dont take anything i said that way

P….. so now after all these years any thoughts on going from cp3 to p pump? I am thinking about doing my 2007 5.9 but wasn’t sure if it was a straight forward conversion

P-pumped has not been on DTR in 16 years...

I doubt P-pumping an electronically controlled motor is "straight forward"
