Opinions and help for Smarty/Towing?

First let me preface this by stating that ALL I am interested in is better towing...

My truck is bone stock except a MBRP muffler, MPC Eliminator intake Pipe, Rokktech Sensor, Westach Combo Guage and an all metal intercooler off an 06 CTD.

I tow a 20ft enclosed trailer maxxing out at 10,000lbs pretty often. I also tow a 3 horse slant-living quarter trailer when fully loaded maxxes out at around 11,500lbs. Bone stock, I can hit 1200-1250 deg F on the EGT on some of the grades on the Eastcoast (I26-Sam's Gap, I77-Fancy Gap, I77-Flat Top, US25-Saluda Mtn).

I would like to get a Smarty for both extra towing power and some of the enabling features it has. Will my EGT's be a concern with the Smarty in one of the lower settings? I really don't want to have to start swapping turbo's. The only two aftermarket air filters I will consider would be either the AMSOIL Nano Drop in or maybe a new AFE Dry Media style.

Can I keep EGT's in check with the stock intake and the AMSOIL drop in filter? Will saying bye bye to the kitty be manditory to keep my EGT's below 1250? Not oppose to kicking the cat out but if I don't have to, even better.

I have seen some people say that their EGT's improved with the Smarty. Is this strictly due to timing? What is the recommended tow setting for the Smarty with my near stock arrangement?

Thanks for all your help. Got some tax refund money burning a hole in my pocket!

You should be fine in the lower setting like level 3 with the lastest SMARTY update.
Note, might have to remove the Rokktech with the new SMARTY program. I had quiet a bit of timing rattle after the update. Apparently Marco increased the timing with the update.

If it is a little toasty egt wise you can always add a little pressure module to help keep the egt's in check as well.

Let me just say that depending where you are(elevation) I think plays a big part in EGT's. I live in the rockies where this 10% grades everywhere you go. I can say from my experience with programmers my EGT's get out of control when pulling, but you can control it with your right foot. I just hate having half the go hammer left and not being albe to use it. So yes it will help with power but you might have to watch your gauges a little closer. My Smarty does run higher on EGT's than my Superchips. Maybe just start with something not so agressive, thats where it all starts. Just a little more power.

Adding some power may give you more leeway in gear selection so you can help manage egts. I've had high egts going up grades with 20,000+ behind me because I used so many rpms to maintain speed. Maybe with more power and the next gear up you could keep the engine cooler.

OK...but I was always under the impression that higher RPM's meant more air flow and lower EGT's, so if towing up steep grades I typically go down to fifth instead of staying in sixth and tow at a lower RPM. Or is this just true if you are 100% stock? Does the turbo's efficiency (or lack of for a stock one above 32psi) start playing a role when using a downloader? I'll probably never use any settings higher than 3 or 4 on the Smarty while towing but I don't want to lose drivability.

Oh and thanks for the comments guys. Keep'm coming!
