Newbie to the Diesel world and have a few basic questions

Hi all, its my first post ever here. so here it is, i have recently pick up a 03 3500 5.9L dually and i am already having some issues, surprise surprise. It started with the front drive shaft cv joint center ball housing, i managed to get that fixed with a whole new shaft. Then the low fuel light has gone on, so i am currently in the process of getting that one sorted out along with a power steering pump and a reservoir that was fixed with JB weld, that still leaks! The fuel lifter/sending unit is really noisy and when does a guy know when its time to put a new unit in?
i would appreciate any input you might have or if there is any thing i should be keeping a look out for. thx. i have read alot of forms out there and this one seams to be the most legit with some guys who really know there stuff..

Welcome! As far as the lift pump, you will know when to replace it when you turn the key and she don't crank Or at least that is how I knew when to change it. Mine was around 120k miles. It will differ from truck to truck but the stock ones are not worth replacing. I bypassed mine with a BD pump for about $250. There are a lot of posts on here about bigger/better upgrades, but mine does me just fine.

welcome to the forums!

Welcome to DTR. Your "fuel lifter/sending" unit is the lift pump. In an '03, it was attached to the rear of the fuel filter and many went to the grave early in the life of the truck, sometimes taking the CP3 (High Pressure) pump with it. Dodge replaced them with in-tank pumps. Most of us replaced them with an external pump mounted on the inside of the frame rail. If mine was noisy, I'd keep an eye on my fuel pressure gauge till the replacement arrived.

Oh, and if you are looking for a place to make a purchase, check out this place. Look all you want, but CALL before you buy, tell them who you are "Member of DTR" and you will get the best price.

If you don't yet have gauges, Fuel Pressure and Exhaust Temp are for starters, Transmission Temp if you have an auto or Boost Pressure if you don't, for a 3rd Gauge. Good Luck, and have fun.
