Need help deciding on tranny upgrades
Hi guys,
I'm looking at my options as far as my tranny is concerned. I'm going to do all the labor myself, so that's a non issue. Here's the options that I've narrowed it down to.
Option 1 - Goerend Triple Disk converter and Valve Body. Lifetime warranty.
OR
Option 2 - Full replacement tranny from a reputable, semi-local trans guy. It has all new internals, Billet Triple disk TC, VB, new bands, new strut, new anchor, new accumulator, upgraded fulcrum lever, larger direct drum, red eagle clutches and bands, all new seals, and hardened input and intermediate shaft. He warranties it for 3 years/100,000 miles and up to 750 hp.
The full tranny would be easier to install as I wouldn't have to fool with the TC or VB. Just swap em out and go. The difference in price is only $1000. The tranny guy has been in business for a long time and seems to really know his stuff. But then again, he's not one of the big name guys that seem to get so much praise, so it's a bit of a risk to take that the full trans will be reliable and handle everything. Decisions, decisions...
I don't plan to get too crazy with the power (but how often have people said that?). I don't race, and I don't tow heavy often. The full trans just seems like it gives me more options later on. And I get a brand new and upgraded trans for a really good deal, and not have to worry that some of the stuff inside my trans (80,000 miles on it) may take a dump on me from the increased pressures and whatnot. I just can't make up my mind. Funds are limited, so a fully built trans from one of the big guys is out.
If it were you, what would you do?
EDIT: Crap, I meant to post a poll with this. If one of the mods can do that for me I would appreciate it. I don't see a way to go back and change it. Thanks.

I don't have the money for billet shafts right now. I'm stretching to be able to afford the full transmission.
I don't think he will still give me the deal that he is if I go with someone else's TC and/or VB. I don't think that he will warranty it the way he is either with someone else's parts in there. I don't blame him honestly. I know if I was building it, I wouldn't want to have the possibility of something happening because of someone else's parts.
So it's basically how I put it earlier. I can get the Goerend TC/VB or I can get the full trans from him. Which would you go with if you were in my shoes?

I would go with the full trans. if he will waranty it like you said, I would do that instead of some Goerend parts. Look at my sig and you will see the Goerend parts I have which are absolutely great, but if I could have gotten a full trans for a grand more I would do that.

What about the converter stall? What kind of stall should I be looking for?
I plan to swap my turbo out for a stocker from an 04.5+ initially. If I up the power enough later to warrant more air, I'll just go with a twins setup using the stocker when money permits. So that means I should go for a lower stall then stock right?

I ended up having a guy that was even closer to me than the one that I talked about in this thread do it. He builds race transmissions for the local dirt track racer crowd. He was cheaper by about $500 and did much of the same things plus the swap and labor was included. It included a billet triple disk TC, shift kit, and new clutches and all that good stuff. Stock shafts for now.
So far, I love it. It seems very solid. Shifts are nice and firm, but not bone jarring. Hope this helps.
