Good luck with the Optimas, I've had several and they all died about twice as fast as a lead/acid.

Get your charging circuit checked first before you put two new batteries in it.

It may just be a battery shroted out or it could be a bad batt heat sensor causing an over charging condition.

Better safe then sorry.

You need to have two known good batteries that are properly charged to accurately check the charging system.

I also would stay away from the Optimas.

I would have your charging system fully checked before you put to many miles on your new batteries. Other wise you might find yourself replacing your new batteries.

Optima batteries are never rated very high. They have their advantages in certain situations. But they generally don't last as long as other cheaper batteries.

Consumer Reports does a battery test every couple of years or so. The top three are always Interstate, Autozone, and Sears.

Both Sears and Autozone will test your charging system for free. Autozone will install your batteries for free.

I hate the fact that I am saying this but....

I have 4 diesels in my family(2 brothers, mine and dads). We have been driving cummins diesels for about 10 yrs. I have replaced the batteries in all the trucks and just buy the cheapy yellow and black MAXX ones at Wal-Mart. We have had great luck with them and you can't deny the warranty is handy concidering there is a wally world in about every town now. But I have never had to use it. They have always lasted 5 years or more. Hard to beat $80 each and 5 years of service.

The most common problem is you have a loose/bad connection from the passenger side battery to the drivers side battery. The big red wire...LOL and the positive connections. The alternator charges the passenger battery, is jumped over to the drivers side battery, and the ECM senses the voltage on the drivers side battery and adjust the Alternator for the proper charge. If you have a loose connection the ECM will think the alternator is not charging enough and will crank up the alternator resulting in an overcharged, smelling, or exploded passenger side battery, which you have. Take a look.

My 06 was eating the passenger side battery about every 6 months, (under warranty) dealer had to replace the positive cable to keep the battery from puking. Once they did that I have not had the problem re-occur.
