MBRP 5" exhaust
MBRP 5" exhaust
I just ordered my new exhaust yesterday. I was reading on MBRP's the site yesterday and it says that it is 5" from the turbo back, on the 03's now. Just asking to see if any else knew if it was a 5" down pipe or a 4" down pipe.
On the 03-04 according to their web site it's a 4" downpipe with a welded 3.5" adaptor coming off of the stock cast elbow. Then the 4" goes into 5" using an adaptor 4"-5" at the end of the downpipe and then 5" to the muffler and all the way out.

Kind of lame if you ask me. If I want a 5", I want 5" from the turbo back.
Flo pro and Magnaflow are the two that I know that have a 5" downpipe.
The reason for the MBRP having a 4" downpipe is ease of install for the "do-it-yourselfers" out there. Sometimes fitting a 5" downpipe is too much for the average guy.

So how do these 5" exhausts sound? And do they hurt preformance on bottom? Scott are u happy with the soud of it? I want to put one on my stock 06 but i will soon have a intake and a TST! I just dont want my truck to have that raspy sound!
well what is raspy to you? wen I first asked my guy about it I told him not to loud wen it was on he told me it was throte it is that and then sum but now I am glad I did it I love it with the silensed ring off it is like a jet
The elbow off the turbo is only 3.5" so it really doesn't matter if the pipe starts out at 3.5". What you need to do is get a elbow off a newer truck and then get the system for a newer truck. Then it will start out at 4". I just picked up a 4"in/4"out elbow for this reason.

I've done the same thing with the 4" elbow. I have pics posted in my members photo gallery of the two systems side by side if your interested. The downpipe is 4" for about 10" and then converts to full 5". If you search this topic you will find a previous thread that shows a downpipe that goes straight to 5" from a different manufacturer. Personally I think that at my level of mods, a 5" is more than enough so a few inches of 4" doesn't hurt anything.
Check out the pics anyway, I have a few more if you want any particular details.
I love the sound of mine and have had several friends comment that it's the best sounding diesel the've ever heard.
P.S. The MBRP system comes ready to install out of the box and it took me just under two hours to remove the old system and fully install the new one. Good luck.
