Magnaflow Turbo-back 5" Exhaust System #15989

Well, the straight piped life was driving me to drink, so I finally took the plunge and bought a cast iron elbow from a 325/600 turbo off eBay a few weeks ago and installed Magnaflow's #15989 5" Turbo back exhaust system on my 305/555.

All I needed in addition to the elbow was a new band clamp for the elbow-to-downpipe connection. Magnaflow's systems are nice.....they hang right outta the box with no modifications.

This system is nice as it also uses band clamps to join the pipe sections together.

Here's a few fics of the installation.

Downpipe at new elbow. You'll need to remove the locator pins on the 4" elbow in order for everything to line up correctly.

Uses OEM hangers and the muffler is a straight-through design.

Over-the-axle section.

Another shot over-the-axle.

Tailpipe exit location. I see a 6" Flo-Pro stainless steel tip in the distant future (OK, next week).

I can now listen to my Sirius Satellite Radio in peace as well as carry on a conversation with other people without shouting at everyone. Seems as if I had to run the radio louder to drown out the truck, then what used to be a normal conversation turned into a shouting match whilst listening to the radio.

EGT's seem a bit lower, in part to what I believe is more so from the 325/600 4" elbow....although I'm sure the 5" pipe didn't hurt, either.

It sounds great....at a normal row of the gears with Attitude on 0, 1, or 2, and light throttle, it's just a tad louder than stock (from what I remember) until you get into 50% or 60% throttle or more. Bump the Attitude on 5 and row through the gears hard and you'll soon see it's not stock sounding but not anywhere near obnoxious. It screams "I ain't stock" without being a nuisance. I like it lots and I'm glad to be outta the straight pipe business......I'm 41 so maybe I'm turning into an old fart, I dunno.

Magnaflow is probably one of the nicests systems out there for these trucks as far as i am concerned. I know there are other companys that make nice stuff but they usually take alittle fab to make them fit properly out of the box.

What about the dreaded drone. At highway speeds does it drive you insane. I have thought about going 5" but I have never heard one. But I have heard my brother's straight pipe. How's it compare? If you would swing by and let me here yours I could by your dinner for your troubles.

No drone present with the new Magnaflow..... Lots of drone when straight-piped (I straight-piped it just a few days after Christmas and I about went nuts). I towed an '86 Nissan Ext Cab 4x4 pickup sometime in January about 57 miles......on one section of road on the way home (a 6% grade 2.3 miles long) I thought I was gonna vibrate out of the cab. I can handle anything a few miles, but if I had to take a lonnnngggg trip towing whilst straight-piped, I'd pull my hair out. It's really nice at highway speeds; no particular interstate speed unloaded produces any drone to my ears. I suspect the same results even while towing.

I had a 4" Magnaflow turbo-back stainless steel exhaust system on my 2000 RAM 2500 CTD 4x4 Quad Cab and it was sweet......no drone there, either.

The Magnaflow is just right in my opinion.....not obnoxious but quite a lot louder than stock when you crank on it.

Booger, if you'll make it three dinners, I'll take ya up on it.
My wife and I are going to Orlando to take my 4.75 year old to see The Big Mouse March 6th. If you're anywhere near I-75 we'll talk.

maynard, i think you had the tip of your straight pipe under the edge of the bed.

mine was like that, the section of straight kicked the tip over (because the muffler had offset inlet/outlet) barely under the edge of the bed.

i put a tip on my straight pipe, and it was no longer like yours was (had to shout over)

but with a trailer with a rock guard on it, it will still TALK to you...

i'd like one notch quieter, really. but it's SO fun to blip the throttle past the gassers....

I had the 5 inch magnaflow. I had to take it off. It had such a loud drone while pulling my 7000lb work trailer, I just couldn't take it any more. I now have the mbrp cat back 4" and now it sounds good. I still have the 5" system for anybody interested. Thanks Kevin

Actually I am only about 12 miles from I-75. But I think I will stick with the 4" for now. I tow almost every day so the drone gets old. As far as dinner goes I will still buy if I am in town that weekend. If not then have a safe trip anyway.

i love my magnaflow 5" but I do have a few things I don't like about it. First, on a drive from AK to MN, the whole system shifted aft and pulled separated the muffler from the pipe going in. Made it really really loud and nowhere to fix it. Also, you can see in my photos that it has rusted like crazy and the pipe cracked. It still works fine and sounds great...just wished it still looked a little better.

Just got my 6" x 15" Flo-Pro polished stainless steel tip in today. I hope to get it installed this Friday on my day off; can't do it at work as we have no welding equipment for stainless steel. It's huge !

I have the same magnaflow too and love it, you can usually get a used one on ebay or cragislist. I wanted a valid warranty so I got it here. Magnaflow 15989. Also some of the forum sponsors usually have a sale going on. Either way its a great exhaust system, sounds great, and very easy to install.
