you can do it in either place. the most accurate temp are going to be from the manifold.

I assume you mean the probe?

Most people feel this is the best spot, more pics and tips in my gallery:

Thanks for the pic. Did you pull your manifold off? If not how do you keep the metal from going in to the turbo when drilling?

I have a prober where Fisherguy has his, and one after the turbo in the cast iron elbow. When drilling the manifold, start and idle your engine, it will blow out the shavings. Coat your tap in lots of grease in the flutes and clean often. Its not too bad to do, gets a little warm though.

Or pull the turbo... Either way works... I felt safer pulling the turbo..

Grease on the drill bit, starting with a small one working up to the final, then spun turbo with finger to make sure nothing's jammed, then fired it up with hole open to blow out crap, whole thing's spelled out in my gallery.

I installed mine right after the turbo in the cast elbow that connects the turbine to the downpipe. It works fine. You can go before the turbo just fine, but I HIGHLY recommend removing the exhaust mani before doing so. One little piece of metal in your compressor can have the potential to totally ruin your day.

As far as time consuming... well that is all on the perception and skill of the beholder.
