Question Installing EGT gauge

I am about to install my gauges, and am wondering if I should remove my turbo before drilling the hole for the sensor?

I have heard that you can just run the truck while drilling, but I do not want to take any risks.

If I do remove the turbo will I need a new gasket for it?

Thanks, CJ

I was wondering the exact same thing! I was planning to drill for the probe just above the turbo where the exhaust manifold is vertical, so taking off the turbo would be ideal in my opinion.

I undid the four bolts holding the turbo to the manifold and moved it about 1-2 inches away and plugged it with a rag so no shavings could get in. I then drilled away without the engine running. When I was finished tapping, I cleaned it out with a magnet and a vacuum and then hooked it all back up. Worked great for me.

I am also trying to figure out how to drill the hole!!??

I am thinking the only way I can touch it is with a 90 degree drill?

Or could I just remove the wheel well linear? (I haven’t looked real close yet)

I guess if I had to, I could rent the drill.....

I followed instructions from a couple different sources.

Cover the exhaust tip with duct tape and leave about a 1/2" hole.
Keep lots of heavy grease on the tip of the drill. I kept cleaning the chips off and re-greasing.
Just before you start to break through, start the engine and complete the drilling. It whistles a bunch, it also splattered grease all over the hood, but no chips in the turbo

I also put mine right behind the shroud between 3-4, straight down. Seems to be a common place.
