Info on upgrades to my 2004 2500
Hi guys,
I was thinking about some up grades to my 04 2500 dodge. I want your thoughts on an exhaust system and chips or programmers. On the exhaust, I was told that I need to go with a 4in system with a straight thru muffler. I really don’t want it to be transfer loud so I don’t know what system to go with. As for the chip/programmer, I am looking to try to extend my MPH. What systems do I need to look at for this? Thanks in advance for any help.
Mike

Hey Mike.
Do you have an 04 or 04.5? Because I believe they have different exhaust sizes.
Done anything to the air intake?
Do you have any gauges?
Take care of those three things first...then look into the Smarty Jr. or Sr.

Thanks Guys for the info. I have not done anything yet nor do I have any other gauges. I was thinking my truck is a 04 but how do I tell if it is a 04 or a 04.5. I know I sound dumb to all this but you have to start somewhere.

You want more MPH or MPG? Either way a Smarty will help you out. My truck was bone stock at once too, but I ended up with everything in the sig and love it. Exhaust wise, look for something like MBRP, Silverline, Magnaflow, etc but make sure it is a full 4" turbo back. If you want it to be quiet get you a good Donaldson Muffler to replace the kits muffler.

Mike is a good friend of mine and has the 04.5. He has not done anything to the truck as far as performance wise ever. He wants better MPG all around and with that better towing MPG. MPH is not a factor because he drives like a granny .......... I know that he has never done a Tranny flush and his 48re is starting to shift pretty hard into O/D. What is the best path to go down as far as maintenance. Will he need to have the bands adjusted? He is going to flush the tranny but will that be enough? The truck has around 80,000 miles on it and he pulls a 25+ foot goose neck with Tractor / Trucks on it. Boost / JB

He will only need a muffler then and maybe send the cat on its way. The SmartyJr will be good for what he wants along with gauges since he's gonna tow alot, and truthfully if he can afford it I would suggest he do a TC/VB upgrade on the tranny to hold up to his towing better. When he's into that he can adjust the bands and clean things up.

Thanks for your input! I picked up a Truck Camper with his truck last night and I have noticed that while accelerating once the truck drops into 3rd it quickly goes straight into o/d. I know that this is a common problem but what can be done to fix this?

Honestly getting a full rebuild will get you everything you want and fix most all your issues, but it will be costly. I'm not too familiar with the 48re so don't get me started, maybe someone can give you advice from experience.

3500 - 5500 is the price range I'm finding from significant (almost complete rebuilt) to a totally "new" billet tranny. That's from the big name guys. Save the pennies.
