I love my Smarty - BUT

I have been running a triple stack of TST R49/EZ/Smarty for around a year and a half now. Lastest Smarty Moderate TM for aftermarket turbo and stock injectors. Truck runs good with this stack, but the shifting is a little irractic from 2-3 and the smoke seems to have gotten almost unmanageable no matter what Smarty #. I have a slightly wounded CTD (probably scarred cylinder and some bad injectors) so I just chalked up everything to that.

Decided to remove the Smarty before my last trip to Austin just to see what it ran like. I had forgotten just how well behaved my truck is with the TST R49 and EZ stack. No smoke to speak of unless I want it and shifts are close to normal. Even the SPS66 turbo lag seems gone, can't explain that. Mileage is still good even at 80+ on the highway.

I love the Smarty, but I think for now it will be only for track in the future if I ever get things fixed.

For daily driving I am running TST 05TT program, 12* Auto Timing, level 4/1 and EZ on level 1. Runs smoother than I ever remember before. Just thought I would post something. Been kinda busy lately with other things.

Smartys on my truck aren't very driveable at all, seems you have similar issues.

Try loading different Smarty Programs/Updates. You should find the one your truck likes.

Correct. Ive tried every torque management level the Smarty has available. I even got my hands on the "beloved" Beta 4.4 here recently. Now my truck throws rail pressure codes with the Smarty. I wonder why At idle, rail pressure is as high as 12000psi. My sig says it all though!

I have tried many, many different boxes and downloaders over the last three years. Have tried many double/triple stacks and spent many Saturdays on a dyno tuning different program levels/settings etc. Before Smarty I was running BDTD w/CL with the TST/EZ. I have always been able to find a stack combo for street and one for track that worked well. The Smarty/TST/EZ on mine was the best for track for sure, but for now I think I will stick with TST/EZ for the street.

When the Smarty beta is released for download I will try it, but it will have to be much more street friendly for me to drive it daily.

It is more streetable than the original smarty software on my truck, but I guarantee you wont need an EZ anymore!

Sorry to hear some of you guys are having problems or are not happy with your "Smarty Programmers."

I am one DTR Member here who is VERY HAPPY with mine (Smarty "Wild" Program) "stacked" with the TST PM 3 CR with R-49. My 06' is pretty much stock other than the boxes and a Schwitzer 62/12 Turbo, a full billet ATS tranny and an AFE Intake. I also have STOCK injectors, and a STOCK fuel system. The truck put down 534 H.P. on David Dunbars' Dynojet 248, it runs 13.1@105 MPH in the 1/4 mile and can tow our trucks anywhere in the U.S.(including up 6-7% grades on I-77 in the Smoky Mountains) with respectable EGT's and power! IMHO you can't do much better than that! It is by far one of the best things I have ever put on one of my Dodge CTD Pickups.

My personal thanks to Marco and Bob Wagner for a GREAT PRODUCT and for excellent customer service. I see Bob Wagner on this site constantly answering questions and trying to help our Members in anyway he can.

Well the thread title is how I feel about my Smarty, I do love it. Just tired of having to watch the smoke in traffic where I drive daily. Stop and go traffic and so much smoke is not fun MOST of the time. On the track with just the mods in my signature it was pretty consistent 12.7s. I was very happy with that.

I will just have to see what the new programming does on mine.

I kind of get a haze in the night time on the street but what diesel doesnt. I just take it easy on the road for the most part. I think mine is pretty drivable. I run in on 9 all the time. I have turbo lag anyway Lol. I would say just keep it around for when you want to go to the drag strip like you said. I dont like taking anything off my truck. I hate to detune anything, then I want to sell it

Hey John_P,
Like people our trucks behave differently with the same mods. What works well for someone else is a dud for another. I tried stacking the EZ with the SMARTY and hated it. The truck surged really bad. Take the EZ off and it's back to being very smooth.
Whenever Marco releases the new SMARTY version with pressure added you might want to try that and ditch the EZ.

MikeyB:

I realize what your saying about "trucks behaving differently." I think it is a bigger problem with the CR Trucks than any of the other three generations of Dodge Diesel Pickups. With that being said,.... I wanted the Members here to know that there are trucks that have the Smarty Programmers that are running very well, which is the reason I posted. My truck runs great with it.

Also, I don't have an Edge EZ on mine. I am running the TST PM 3 with R-49 AND the Smarty "Wild" Programmer.

With the Beta 4.3 and 4.4 software, the added pressure negates any need for the ez. I have found the 4.4 to be very streetable and a very good program. I don't tow with it however because there is too much smoke when first taking off.

Phil!! Where ya been?? I know your experience with the Smarty... i have to say it has been the best thing I've tried so far. And yeah... I have tried more than the Banks recently... OOOPS! Sorry admin... Forgot "banks" was a curse word
