I'd like to tow a 15K 5th wheel but my towing capacity right now is 11.4K. What would I need to increase my capacity?

A Banks rep said their $3,000+ PowerPak would do the trick, no problem.

A buddy thought an Edge Juice w/Attitude monitor would be all I need and it's only around $800.

 

A Smarty. They work awesome on the Cali 03 motors.

i agree with chrleb1, a smarty will do it for you. but i also agree with your friend. if you go with a edge+ attitude, you get the power you need and a way to monitor it. if you smarty you need EGT gauge as well as a boost gauge. you have a 5-speed so tranny temp is not a huge concern. my opinion is go with the Edge Juice W/ attitude; it leaves you wide open for up grades down the road.

Go with the Smarty Sr. Yeah, an edge Attitude will work but will be very hot and you will not be able to use the power. Get the Smarty Jr. or Sr. Your biggest challenge will be pin weight with that SRW truck and stopping, so get a packbrake. Before you do anything get gauges. EGT, Boost, and Fuel pressure.

The juice box likes to run hot... Just ask Madhat on here. For hp to hp, the Smarty runs the coolest out of everything. Level 5 would probably be really smooth on your truck. Also, I'd find a turbo from an 04.5-07 and swap it out. Your stock turbo is just too small.

I am with Erick...Mine was an SO 2004 truck, so I know your pain. Smarty is the best way to go. Add boost and EGT gauges, a later model turbo and downpipe, S&B intake and a larger exhaust system. You can do it all for around $2500 (add $1800 for the pacbrake) installed. I may have a modified 04.5+ turbo for sale after this weekend, it would be a bolt-on deal for you.

 

Thanks all for insights. My plan is to:
1. Get EGT and Boost gauges
2. Buy a Smarty Sr
3. Install a PacBrake
4. Install a S&B air intake
5. Upgrade Turbo (Erik let me know if you get one)

Pull a buddies 5er up the grade out of San Diego and see how it does.

If that doesn't do it:
1. Increase exhaust flow
2. Add an Edge w/attitude...run it at 1 or 2 and watch the gauges.

Noone's said pulling 15K is crazy so that's where I'm hoping to get.

 

you won't have any trouble with 15k. I tow 11-13k regularly and have towed the grapevine with it and no sweat. Your clutch should be on the list for an upgrade. Anything more than level 3 with the SMarty will be too much. If you are going to be hauling that kind of weight on a regular basis, you will need to go Double Disc from SB.

 

I also have the ca emission 235 motor. You wont need the edge if you get a smarty. Smarty all the way, and figure on an upgraded clutch at some point when you want to turn the power up.

Your list of upgrades is sound, except you wont need the edge. You will be absolutely amazed at how much more the smarty will give you.

I started with Banks six gun with speedloader. It was just OK. The smarty really rocks!
